Hadong Hwagae Jangteo(Marketplace), Meeting Point of Residents from Yeongnam and Honam Areas

One of songs by Jo Yeong-nam goes like “in Hwagae Jangtwo along the stream of Seomjin River that flows across Jeollado and Gyeongsangdo, Hadong people from lower village and Gurye people from upper village gather and open a market every five days~". Hwagae Jangteo used to be a traditional marketplace where the people from Gurye of Jeollado and Hadong of Gyeongsangdo gathered, sell and buy stuff, not to mention it used to be the 7th biggest market for its trading volume in Korea with all merchants from Namwon and Sangju as well. However, it started to disappear as the mountain villages fell into disrepair when the government started to suppress North Korean partisans on Jiri Mountain since the Korean War, and had been under reconstruction in 2001.

In front of Hwagae Jangteo, there is a three-forked crossroad along with the stream of Seomjin River and a brook. Over the bridge far away, Gurye, Jeollanamdo is there and this way is Hadong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do. So three streams meet at Seomjin River that flows to the south drawing boundary between Jeollado and Gyeongsangdo.

In old times, slash-and-burn farmers from Jiri Mountain came here to sell deodeok(mountain herb whose roots have restorative properties), balloon flowers, edible shoots of a fatsia, bracken and so on, those from Jeollado sold threads, needles, scissors and so on, and those from Hadong brought seafood such as seaweeds, sea mustards and pollack. Nowadays, they deal with medicinal herbs, souvenirs and seafood caught in Seomjin River.

Probably those people wouldn't have any memories in old Hwagae Jangteo but it seems like the marketplace is getting its fame back. I believe the singer Jo Yeong-nam's song must've played a big role in this trend.

Many of medicinal herbs from Jiri Mountain are not available in normal markets. It was fun to take a look around the market.

Since my body does not work like it used to do as I get aged, I suddenly thought that 'this would be for my …' lol

Here are small flowerpots with spring flowers. When my yard is done, I'm going to buy and plant these one by one.

A store you should drop by if you're from afar or abroad. It's rather an accessory store than a souvenir store, and I saw pretty things there.

Cute and small ceramic items are sold for 1-2,000 won so it won't be much even if you buy ten for your friends.

Well, a tourist has an obligation to eat something new always! I bought a honey-filled rice cake for 1,000 won. It's sweet and chewy. It's perfect to satisfy hunger for a while.

There's sweetfish in Seomjin River so you'll easily find fried sweetfish and fried mugwort. I would like to drink magolli but it was daytime so should I try fried sweetfish just to know how it tastes?

This must be sweetfish in water tank. I felt guilty to fry them when they're alive. But I have no choice. Hey~

They were just alive and now they're fried and served. I heard there are a lot of people coming to this market for this. It costs 20,000 won for one dish (2 people). They're just fried and the bones are chewable, and I loved the taste. It made me want to drink magolli but I had to leave after we finish them. Let's go~

After the fried sweetfish, we went down to see Seomjin River under the bridge. I was there exactly 4 years ago and the ships abandoned by the river were there exactly the same. I don't know if the time stopped or went by slowly, somehow it made me feel like I was the only one who got older for 4 years to see the water flowing south.

I saw tiny living things on the riverbed where the water doesn't flow. They're really small flowers that look like roses. I'm amazed and surprised by the persistence power of nature to bloom lives anywhere.

Hadong has a lot of things to see compared to near cities like Gurye or Gwangyang. Right next to the market, Plum Blossom Festival was held in Gwangyang and the 5km long Simni Cherry Blossom Road with cherry blossoms leading to Ssanggyesa Temple in Hadong makes the whole area look spectacular in spring. I say one of places you shouldn't skip on your trip to Hadong in spring is Hwagae Jangteo. I guess the traffic is heavy during Plum Blossom Festival in spring but it's a definitely must-see place in Hadong. Buy some medicinal herbs for your health, have a bowl of magolli and fried sweetfish, that would make your trip worth.
