“Boryung Coal Museum”, the first coal museum in South Korea

Coal is the only natural resource which is economically feasible in South Korea. Coal and briquette have been representative energy sources in South Korea since 1960s, giving a heat to Koreans after the Korean War. As we may know, coal had been the base of every energy industries. In Boryung Coal Museum, you can find the origin and history of coal. Coal and briquette are used only in some houses and restaurants nowadays, it is meaningful to recognize the base of wealthy Korea.

The entrance of the museum is distinctive. Maybe it would mean a coal mountain. Here we go.

The end of museum is connected with closed mine head, which is open to citizens. I heard that
the air from closed mine head is used for air conditioning and heating. When entering inside, you can feel really cool atmosphere, which is totally different from air conditioner. I think that is the reason why Passive houses are built below the ground.

While outside is boiling, inside is really cool and pleasant. The wind of closed mine head is so cool that I would feel cold if I stay here for a long time. Most staff members are wearing long sleeved shirts.

Boryung Coal Museum is not as big as Taebaek Coal Museum. But it has a story of the birth of the space and the origin of coal, shows equipments for mining coal. It also describes the process of making briquette, shows the tools and tells a story about a life of mine worker.

This is the core gathered in a coal mine of Chungcheongnam-do. It is cylindrical rock sample from the hole to find out the location of coal and quality of land. It looks like an adzuki beans ice cream bar.

It has really sunk in what an underground tunnel looks like. Workers dug an underground tunnel
in tiers, and then gathered coal. Wow, I admire the human ability and their patience.

I heard that quite many countries use coal fuel even now, but they would be surprised that the museum has various equipments. This coal-making machine has not changed since I saw it in my childhood. There were several machines like this, and each coal was gathered in the big belt.

These are explosives that were used for blowing up mines. They aren't the real things, are they?

While I am watching the belt and pumps with odd shape, I feel proud of human capacity to design and create the equipments. Few of us would understand the principles now, even though they were made over the hundred years ago. Human ability derives from deficits.

Now, I am going to visit an underground tunnel. Although either air conditioner or blower is not working, cool wind is blowing from somewhere. I used to go to an underground tunnel in Taebaek and Mungyeong in winter, but it was warm at that time. It is surprising that it maintains certain temperature.

Group residence place in 1960s remains as it is, surrounding Boryung Coal Museum. People are living, of course. Photo exhibition was hold on the mine wall. Long wash is hung over in front of
boarding homes. It was miserable and heart breaking.

Big equipments used in mine are exhibited in outdoors. You can see a hutch, a man cage, a ventilator and trucks in a lawn park.

There are some events for children in Boryung Coal Museum. They can make a briquette by paying 1,000 won, and go down mineshaft under 400 meters by elevator. An exhibition about a coal mine life was hold on the second floor. I could not visit the exhibition since it was under reconstruction. If you visit a couple of days after, you can enjoy everything! It is worthwhile to look a round if you take a trip to Boryung.
