3. A Brief Introduction To Bindaetteok 빈대떡


Bindaetteok is a kind of Jeon, which is made of mung beans. It is called “Mung Bean Pancake”.


It originates in “Bingga” in 17th century in China, which was made of ground mung beans.


The Chinese word “Bingga” have changed in Korea over again. It changed to “Binga”, and then became “Bingatteok”. In 19th century, however, its name was fixed to “Bindaetteok”.


Some people say it was “a rice cake for the poor” since many poor people mainly ate it in order to substitute for meat when worshiping the spirits.


There is a lyrics of old Korean popular song, saying “If you don't have money, go and get some bindaetteok.” As it is, bindaetteok has been refreshments for ordinary people for a long time.

To make bindaetteok, you should mix ground mung beans with various ingredients like bracken, scallion, kimchi and pork, and fry it. Most Jeon is made of flour, but bindaetteok is made of mungbean powder. So it tastes good and soft. A lot of oil are used to fry it.


So it is very crispy when you first bite it.Mungbean powder is easily smashed, so you should make it thick. Since it is large, and made of various ingredients, it is good for refreshment, meal and appetizer served with alcoholic beverages.







You can see yellowish pancake while looking around traditional market or main street in Korea. It is “Bindaetteok”. In particular, Jongro street in Seoul or Jongro Gwangjang market is famous for it. Even if you first see bindaetteok, your mouth would be watering. Don't pass by and have a bit of bindaetteok.

4. The Kinds of Bindaetteok

Basically, all of pan-fried vegetable pancake made of mungbean powder are called “Bindaetteok”. There are various kinds of bindaetteok according to the ingredient. For example, meat bindaetteok, kimchi bindaetteok and seafood bindaetteok are popular. There is cheese bindaetteok for young people and foreigners.

5. The Way To Enjoy Delicious Bindaetteok


As bindaetteok is fried with a lot of oil, fresh one is crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Moreover, hot bindaetteok has a flavor of mung beans. When the powder gets cold, it leaves out of your mouth.Except some salt, no special ingredients are added to Jeon.


For that reason, soy sauce is always served with Jeon.Bindaetteok is the same. In order to taste the natural ingredients and mung beans, you should try it without soy sauce. And then dip some of bindaetteok into soy sauce, and appreciate its flavor.
