“Porridge” is one kind of Korean Traditional food. It tastes like “soup” because it is boiled well with soaked rice, meat, seafood, vegetable and grain. There are many kinds of porridge. “Abalone rice porridge” is famous among them.


Abalone has been the most expensive shellfish. Not only that, as it is highly nutritional food, it has been health food for pregnant women, elderly people and patients.Abalone, which is high class food item, was dedicated to King from Jeju.

Abalone has been indigenous product of Jeju so far. People usually ate the flesh of abalone, but one haenyeo made porridge with guts of abalone, which became abalone rice porridge.







To make abalone rice porridge, you should fry sticky rice with sesame oil, and put abalone and its guts. The flesh of abalone is chewy but soft. You can smell aromatic sea fragrance.

4. The Kinds of Abalone Rice Porridge


Frozen abalone is usually used in Seoul or Gyeonggi-do Province, so guts are not put in porridge. On the other hand, there are a lot of natural abalone in the southern sea of Korea, and Jeju. So local people usually eat green abalone rice porridge made of fresh abalone guts. Some shiitake mushroom or vegetables are put in porridge with abalone.
