Sanbang Mountain Area (Bulranji Pension, Sanbangsan Cruise Ship) 신방산

A long long time ago, a hunter went for deer hunting on Halla Mountain. He couldn't find any deer but on his way home, he finally found one. He quickly pulled the bowstring, and no way! The bow did not direct to the deer, but on the bottom of the Great Jade Emperor. The Great Jade Emperor got upset and pulled the mountaintop of Halla Mountain which landed on Sanbang Mountain and the empty space became Baengnokdam Crater Lake.

So this time, we headed to THE Halla mountaintop, surroundings of Sanbang Mountain in southwestern area of Jeju and it is no exaggeration to say that this mountain is the next highest mountain on Jeju because there are not many mountains excluding Volcanic Cone. The Sanbang Mountain looks like a bowl upside down. It rises high unlike regular mountains in Korea.

Around Mount Sanbang, there are many places to sightsee including Songak Mountain, Yongmeori Beach and Sanbangsan Cruise Ship, and even Marado Island, the southeast island of Korea, is visible from there.

Under the foot of Songak Mountain, we dropped by Bulranji Pension, filming site of SBS Drama titled [Life is beautiful] which created a boom of Jeju Island, and went out to the beach in front of the pension for relax with cool breeze.

Getting away from the foot of Songak Mountain that you might regard it as small hill, I looked at Hyeongjebong Peak on Yongmeori Beach under Mount Sanbang and I thought I would like to live on Jeju Island right away if I could see this relaxing and beautiful scenery every day.

The white beach of the eastern coast of Korea gives me fresh freeing but this Jeju beach covered with black basalt somehow looked like an art piece that's decorated elaborately.

The view from Yongmeori Beach is amazing that it's already been in so many dramas and films, and there was Batavia (ship) reappeared to commemorate the drift of the Dutch Hamel, H. in 1668.

When you look behind, you will see one of Yeongjusipgyeong (10 Scenic Wonders of Yoengju), Mount Sanbang(395m), is standing high over the cliff.

I'm told there's a trail so I promised myself I would go to Sanbanggul(cave) that has an old story of goddess 'Sanbangdeok' on the mountainside.

We hate to walk so we directly headed to Hwasunhang(Hwasun port) passenger terminal to sightsee the neighboring beaches so we took the ship and it marched into the sea making white waves.

Strangely, Sanbangsan Cruise Ship fee includes cruise ship fee, entrance fee for marine park (1,000 won for an adult/800 won for an adolescent/500 won for a child) and terminal fee (500 won for an adult / 300 won for a minor).

As the ship moves, we could enjoy the magnificent view of Mount Sanbang and then two enormous stone islands showed up. So-called Hyeongjeseom(brother islet). They look like small rocks from a distance but as you get closer they look bigger. We got even closer and the guys who were fishing barely sitting on the cliff were waving at us.

We arrived under the foot of Mount Songak where Bulranji Pension is located, it felt so different from the view when I was on the land.

Right below the cliff, there is a tragic evidence that Japanese hid self-explosive torpedo boat in preparation for the landing of the Allied Forces at the end of the Pacific War, which is the Cave Fornificataion of Imperial Japan Near the Foot of Songaksan Mountain.

This amazing natural scenery was ruined and ugly holes were formed because of some foreigners and sadly enough, I was told there are hundreds of these within Jeju Island.

A rock called Wild Boar Rock. They say an upset wild boar is drinking water when you take a closer look and yeah, I almost see the pig shape.

The rumour has it that when the waves lap against the Songaksan Jeolmuli you can hear the waves howling, and from here you could enjoy another aspects of horizontal columnar joint through naturally formed cave in the lower part.

Following the columnar joint along the cliff line, you will see a flat island which is very famous for jjajangmyeon from a distance, Marado Island. Plus you also could see Gapado Island behind it.

And then the captain of cruise ship makes an obvious comment on it. “Jeju people do not care even if you pay back (Gapado) or not (Marado)."

By the time we passed by Brother Islet near the Mount Sanbang after we saw Gapado and Marado Islands, we felt it was a very good choice to take the ship even if it's a short course and we enjoyed every minute of it.

Osulloc Tea Museum 오설록티뮤지엄

Jeju has the first tea(茶) museum that specialises in tea in Korea so it would be another way to enjoy relation during Jeju trip.

As you can guess from the name Osulloc, this museum is owned by the leading company in Korea that produces producing green tea, Amore Pacific (former Taepyeongyang) and it also has a trail for walking as well as it provides a course to precious tea cups and tea yourself.

First, when you step on the observatory where you could get the whole view over the neighboring area, green tea plants spread all over the place.

When you look at them far away under the blue sky, you wouldn't know which one is grass and tea but the dark green color makes my eyes and soul relaxed.

You could purchase different kinds of tea and ice cream enjoying this view although the price is quite high around 7,000 won, but even if you don't try it, it is a great place as a park, trail or resting place.

Especially I cannot describe in words what it's like to walk among tea trees with breeze over my face so I strongly suggest you drop by even for a minute to feel it if you happen to be in Jeju.
