Seosan Ganworam Hermitage

Tides are repeated a day. Ganworam hermitage in Seosan turns into land and island. It was built by Muakttaesa in the early Joseon dynasty period. It had been demolished due to anti-Buddhism policy, but it was restored in 1941. Since you must pass by Seosan during the trip to Anmyeondo island, so you'd better to look around here. But you cannot go to the place in time for rising tide, so you should check the time in the website below.

I visited Ganworam hermitage once before, but it was in time for rising tide. So I came to the place in time for ebb tide again. You may not imagine that the hermitage turns into an island.
It looks like below.

It becomes like this at full tide. I took the picture three years ago. I could cross the water with raft. But all rafts were demolished due to security problems. So you cannot go to the site at full tide.

I am touching again. I was so surprised at that time. I am going to enter through Haetalmun on the left sife of the island.

Small child sculptures still protect the entrance as three years ago. If you look at the sea on the backside, you cannot imagine it is an island.

The main temple is located in the middle of the island. It is beautiful whether it is sunny or not.

Sansingak is located on the left side of the main temple. When Buddhism first came into Korea, sansingak was built on the backside of temple, harmonized with folk religion. Most temples have it even these days.

The backside of Ganworam hermitage looks like this. A dam has been created by natural stones. There are some fishes, but cranes and seagulls are devouring them. You may not see in the picture.

Since there is Ganwolhang port right next to the hermitage, it is crowded with many people. It is famous for salted oysters with hot pepper. During the festival period, some women recommend it.

This front yard has been newly created. There are souvenior shops and cafes under the ground. Buddhists roofed the temple with tiles while making a wish. Their prays would be effective. It is a great idea!

I don't believe in religion, but I entered the main temple and donated some money. Big temples may not, but small temples appreciate little donation. You should pay for sightseeing, huh?

Spindle tree over 250 years old is still growing. Have you ever seen this huge spindle tree? You may often see one meter tree used to hide apartment facilities. After hundreds of years, spindle tree has grown like this. It is amazing.

Why don't you visit here during the travel to Anmyeondo island? It is located in Seosan, the entrance of Anmyeondo island, so you don't need to turn around. It is beautiful either at low tide or high tide. Parking fee and admission fee are free. But don't forget to donate 1,000 won at least.

Oh, check the tide time below if you want to visit Ganworam hermitage. If you click it, you can find the tide time of Ganwoldo island. If you check the date and time exactly, you would not make a fruitless trip.
