There is an island without civilization in Goheung, Jeollanam-do. Sihodo, the unhabited island, has drawn attention of many people since they want to experience wild life after the number of tourists has increasead, and TV programs “the law of the jungle” become popular. Assuming that you are cast away in an unhabitited island, you must go hunting, burn firewood and sleep in the mud hut. It would be special event for adults and children who have enjoyed modern conveniences in the city.

Before entering the island, I had a distant view on the monument for the construction of Naro bridge. There are Sihodo on the left side, and Kowloon village on the right side. The program of experiencing primitive life was created by Goheung County Office in 2013, and it has been popular with 3,000 people. You can make a reservation on the phone after checking the schedule on the web site. You must keep it mind that “blocking crab program”, which is held on the tide time, is only held once in two weeks. I will mention the address of the web site and detailed information below.

I saw small Kowloon village before taking a boat. It is a typical fishing village with a few fishing boats. It is so peaceful and friendly.

When you take a boat in the dock of Kowloon village, you can go to Sihodo that has campground for the program of experiencing primitive life. The island in the picture is today's destination. As it takes two or three minutes by boat, anyone can take it.

Although it is just 300 meters, you cannot enter the island without a boat. It was named “Sihodo” as it looks like a lying tiger from the sky. The head of the village said it would not be harmful to people as it looks dead.

I encountered a path while heading to the campground. It is small woodland path so that you can look around the whole island on foot. But the head of the village did not allow me to enter the forest since snakes often turn out in fall. He said it would be safe when walking well-paved road and staying the campground or the mud flat. I am going to walk the woodland path in winter later on.

After walking ten minutes, I saw a village where a number of mud huts had been built in the basin in the center of the island. All of them are used for experience. You can enjoy various programs like the virtual reality of the unhabited island, making flags for the tribe, electing patriarch, tribe activities, primitive market, collecting clams and blocking crabs. Moreover, you can experience primitive life while burning fire and finding water.

You might see the house of primitive man in comic books before. There are a variety of mud huts. You cannot expect heating or air-conditioning systems since there are none of electricity or fuels. Fortunately, you can use light with a lamp. They are all included in experience fee. Then how could you sleep in cool weather? You will be given clean sleeping bag here.

ou must use bonfire in order to cook and eat foods. Either packing lunch or using a gas burner is fine, but you'd better catching fishes on your own. You don't need to worry about the number of fishes, as you can catch as many fishes as you want in blocking crabs event. You can find manila clams or conches at the mud flat.

It is a drowsy day. Some children are having a swing under acorn trees,

and others are riding sleigh in the mud flat with their father.

Children are catching conches, crabs and Boleophthalmus pectinirostris. None of them use smart phones or computers here, since there is no electricity.

Some children have written their wishes on the wall. One child hoped his or her father not to go out at night and drink an alchole. It's so fun. He may be always drunken. :-)

I have never used my smart phone while staying here, because I could enjoy funny games which are impossible in the city. It is a fun place for an adult like me.

As the water is drained, as the mud flat appears. Why don't we go out to the seashore?

You would realize that the mud flat is alive after walking for a while. You will see conches, crabs and Boleophthalmus pectinirostris everywhere.

The primitive island village, which looks like a bay, is really awesome. Old people would not worry about foods, I guess. Plentiful seafoods, dense forest and cool spring. Wow!

Do you know when these pine sticks speared in the seashore are used? They are equipments for “blocking crabs” that I said before. Local people cover nets on these stakes, and catch fishes left after ebb tide. It has been named “blocking crabs” since people catch fishes by blocking tide creeks.

When it is the time for “blocking crabs”, people wearing boots gather to the end of the nets. You just need to scooping up fishes with a net. After waiting for a minute, the water is all drained so you can catch a bunch of fishes. There are many kinds of fishes like black porgy, greenling, cubed snailfish, gizzard shad, flounder and gray mullet, etc.

About seven years old looked child catched these fishes within five minutes. It looks like gray mullets under gizzard shads.

This grandmother digged out these manila clams within a minute. She said it is not crowded and clams are plentyful since people can enjoy “blocking crabs” only for two times in two weeks.

There are a number of uninhabitated islands around Sihodo. The view opens out under a cumulocirrus. It feels like they get rid of my stress from everything.

Oyster shells spread out like a sandy beach in the end of mud flat. November is the season of oysters, so you can catch and cook them on your own here. They are all included in experience fee, of course.

Canon EOS 550D | f/9.0 | iso 100 | 2015:09:28 13:16:33 | Flash did not fire, compulsory flash mode | 17mm

Do you remember that I said I caught a black porgy just a little before? I didn't catch it with a fishing rod. I just picked it up with my hands. It is huge enough to put in the big cooler. Isn't it dead? Nope. It is alive and jumping! My excited wife shows off it. :-)

I strongly recommend Sihodo primitive life experience for those who are fed up with the same travel routines, or keen to experience new things. It is the best place both for adults and children. Oh, don't forget to make a reservation after checking schedules in the web site.
