Dosanseowon Confucian Academy was built by the disciples of Teogye Lee Hwang after he was dead. It consists of two parts; Dosanseodang where Teogye studied and taught Neo-Confucianism, and Dosanseowon that was built to honor his study and virtue. The buildings in the front side are included to Dosanseodang. And the buildings in the back side are included to Dosanseowon.

Dosanseowon Confucian Academy is the center of Yeongnam Sarim, and the place for Teogye Lee Hwang. It holds Hyangsa every spring and fall. Teogye Lee Hwang settled the south of Dosan, and built Dosanseowon Confucian Academy. But he moved to today's place in 1561. He was 61 years old at that time. He passed away in 1570, and the building became Seowon. It was received Saek by the King Seonjo in 1575, and largely flourished. It became the model of other Seowons after it made inner rules that regulate Seowon. It is No. 170 historical site.

Dosanseowon Confucian Academy is located in the steep road. So buildings are standing in order. The order of rank is very strong. The buildings were constructed for teaching and ancestral rites. Usually, there is a lecture hall in the front, and a shrine on the backside. [Naver encyclopedia]

The road to Dosanseowon Confucian Academy is so beautiful. Pine trees are welcoming visitors. A river is flowing far down the ground.

When you see the upper stream of Andong lake on the right side of the road, you will find the road to Dosanseowon Confucian Academy.

There is a low hill in the middle of Andong lake, and a small house is standing on it. This is Sisadan(試士壇). The King Jeongjo built it in March 1792 to honor holding the state examination in Dosanseowon Confucian Academy. There were so many candidates that they had to take an exam beside the river. The examination papers were a hopping 3,632. However, Sisadan was submerged under water due to Andong dam construction in 1976. So round embankment was built for 10 meters. You should cross a river by ferry to go to Sisadan.

Lee Jung-whan discussed mountains and streams of Korea, and the good places to live in the 18th century. He wrote Dosan and Hahoe are the best living places near a stream bank.

I remind of the friendship and love story between Teogye Lee Hwang and Doohyang when I see Japanese apricot flower. Teogye Lee Hwang left a will to give a water to Japanese apricot flower that Doohyang had sent to him. Doohyang took a suicide after she heard the death of Teogye Lee Hwang.

You can find Dong-Seo Gwangmyeong room where books have been kept. Dong Gwangmyeong room was established in the 19th century, and Seo Gwangmyeong room was built in 1930. These rooms house 907 kinds of 4,338 books. Dong Gwangmyeong room keeps Teogye Lee Hwang's books and the books given by the King. Seo Gwangmyeong room keeps the collection of works produced recently. Seowon served as a lecture hall, a library and a publishing house.

Jeongyodang, a lecture hall, is located in the high embankment. It is the No.210 treasure. The signboard written “Dosanseowon” is hanging in front of Jeongyodang. Han Seok-bong, the master of calligraphy in the middle of the Joseon dynasty period, wrote it. The floor was the place for teaching Confucian scholars, and ondolbang was the room for an instructor. In other words, it was the room for head resident of accommodation. You can overlook the scenery of Nakdonggang River from the floor of Jeongyodang. In order to go to Jeongyodang, you should climb steep stone stairs. You can overlook Dosanseowon on the steep land from the floor of Jeongyodang. You can feel the dignity and authority of the buildings and structure of Dosanseowon.

Many families took a picture in front of the stairs of Jeongyodang. It was nice.

The clouds seemed to follow me. The combination of clouds, bamboo and wall was so colorful and picturesque.

The couple who took a rest for a while looked beautiful. I couldn't take a seat to take a picture of them.

When you look at Jeongyodang from Jegigo, you can see fresh bamboo trees.

Some people prepared the utensils used in ancestral rites in Bagyakjae Hall. It would be for Dosan, I guess.

Jeongyodang was built by offspring. Friends, couples and families took a seat here and had a chat.

Jeongyodang has a side door on the west besides the front door. You can find Sanggojiksa and Hagojiksa after entering the side door. They were the accommodation for the keepers of Seowon. It is also called as “Joosa” as foods were made here. They are simple and humble.

Sanggojiksa is the building on the left. The keeper still stays here, and manages the ancestral rites.

There is a quite huge hole under the pillar, but I don't know the use.

Japanese cornlian cherry made the blue sky and the land more beautiful.

Sciadopitys verticillata is standing on the right side of the front door of Seowon. It was planted by the former president Park Chung-hee. However, it ruins the traditional scenery.

The roofs drew my attention, the most. Deep gray, red and yellow roofs had a long history.

You can find the beauty of a tree in Jangpangak here.
