Dokdo Baked Fish

The most crowded place in Sokcho downtown is Rodeo Street in the north of Cheongchoho Lake. Sokcho is a costal city that is known for different kinds of food since it has a variety of seafood.

The first dish we chose is baked fish that is unique in Sokcho. Near the ferry quay behind Rodeo Street, there's a street full of baked fish restaurants.

With regards to fame, 88 Saengseongui(baked fish) restaurant is the most famous since it was aired on 1 Night & 2 Days but since I saw people's comment that we'd have to hurry to finish meals quickly because the restaurant is too crowded, we went to Dokdo Saengseon Gui(baked fish) that is relatively big.

When we got inside it was around 9 p.m. and that's why there were more people drinking alcohol than having meals.

We were starving for not eating all day so we just same there. Then the employee brought table cover. The main dish is fish so they must've been using this to cover the table.

In the big restaurant, the memos written by people were covering the whole walls and even ceiling, which was quite fun to read them.

The most special note is this. It was less than others but as I started to read it, it sounded sadder.

Oh, we were so into the memos that we didn't even order the food. First of all, I ordered Fish Platter for 2 people because we wanted to try fish.

The common dishes were prepared on the table. Unfortunately, this menu does not offer rice so that we had to order bowls of rice additionally.

The common dishes were okay but the red one looked quite particular. This is special food in this restaurant which is squid seasoned with sweet and spicy sauce and so popular among customers.

A little bit later, charcoal fire was served in our table. It's not cheap one, it's real charcoal burning red.

Baked fish in Sokcho is served on the table with charcoal like barbecue as you can see. I like baked fish but I've never tried this before.

Finally, the ingredients of baked fish were served in the plate. Some of them were half cooked. It was enough for two people but I wished there were sand eels.

The fishes including hairtails, chub mackerels, Pacific herrings and the others that I don't know the names of were cut into pieces and laid on the hot plate by the lady who owns the restaurant and is very good at what she does. And we can't miss sail fin sandfish that is also one of special food in Sokcho.

Probably because of hot charcoal or they were half-cooked, they were cooked quite fast. Plus, they are just baked fishes but the yellowish oil coming out of fishes themselves made me drool.

Each kind of dish contains different amount of oil so they are cooked at different time and you'd start with less oiled fish in case there are many kinds.

Who said an irrationally immature person is happier than a hungry mature person? I don't need common sense or anything. I didn't even have to de-bone the fish as I picked it up.

I dipped white fish in soy sauce and put it on a spoon of rice I ordered. It's hard to eat it like this at home because it's hard to bake it so I gotta enjoy while I can.

Rice you can take an extra order is regular rice or albap(rice with fish roe and chopped seaweed on it).

Baked fish was delicious itself but seasoned squid mixed with albap was more flavor and sweeter. The fish roe popping in your mouth is delicious as well.

My wife called me on her way from the bathroom when we almost finished our meal. She pointed something and said “here here~”, and there were strange colored snacks.

Of course they were on sale…since she likes that kind of stuff, I had to make a promise to buy them later and finished the meal first.

She was selecting snacks already while I was packing. These snacks are sold by their weight, not the number of snacks, and they only take cash. So I had to spend 5,000 won for a bunch of snacks.

I had a nice time eating baked fish and my wife had a nice time buying low-quality food in strange shapes~ We were happy with different things but the important thing is that we both were satisfied with dinner at this restaurant.

There are many baked fish restaurants around ferry quay in Sokcho. Most of them offer them at similar prices, 11,000 – 12,000 won for one person. Freshness should be priority when it comes to fish so customers are supposed to eat at a crowded restaurant but when it's too crowded, it's uncomfortable to eat because they have to eat in a hurry. If you don't know where to go yet, the best way to enjoy your baked fish comfortably in Sokcho is to take a look around the street since it's a short list.
