Pyeongchang's must-have Buckwheat dish from 'Pulnae-eum' and 'Bongpyeong Memil Herb Jjinppang(Steamed bun with buckwheat)'


Among Gangwon-do's specialties, there are potato, buckwheat, various wild vegetables, and dried pollack. This city is famous for the buckwheat as much as the Buckwheat Festival is held every September. Potato grows up until summer so you can see only potato flowers, but you will find the endless buckwheat flower garden in autumn.


Bongpyeong area became famous for buckwheat flower because Pyeongchang is in the highland region which is at over 700 meters above sea level and many potatoes and cabbages are planted here. After harvest in summer, the buckwheat are planted on the spot for double-cropping and harvested in autumn. That's why buckwheat is famous. Besides, the setting of the .

You can not see buckwheat flowers but can try buckwheat food every season. The old house was left as it was so this restaurant offers not only something fun to eat but also one to see. The gate section and restaurant building are all thatched house. Name of the restaurant is 'Pulnae-eum'. There is the waterwheel that it's told the itinerant vendor Mr. Heo spent the whole night with the daughter of Seong Seobang in the When buckwheat flowers blossom written by Yi Hyo-seok in front of the restaurant. I'm sorry that I missed to take a photo of it. If you travel along footsteps of the novel, don't forget to see this watermill before the restaurant, even though you don't visit the restaurant..

The Pulnae-eum is just as it was like a thatched house in the old days. I felt like I was taking time machine and went to grandmother's house in my youth. In recent days, there are thatched house-like buildings, but it's hard to find that business is run at real thatched houses.

In the yard, there are cute old materials, farming tools, and unknown flowers beautifully blossomed. I looked around them for a long time and went into the restaurant.

Inside the restaurant looks like a traditional old house. The roof with rafters that mud is spread seems very stylish. This house seems to be quite old.

Other seats were surrounded by whole glass, but I chose one seat where it was possible to open the window. There were beautiful wild roses, chrysanthemums, and snowball bushes blowing beyond the window. They pleased my eyes during the meal.

Even if I fully enjoyed the landscape, my stomach was 'growling'. Let's see the menu… We ordered 3 dishes; A Buckwheat Noodles(6,000won), Spicy Buckwheat Noodles(6,000won), and Assorted Buckwheat(15,000won). It doesn't look like menus are expensive. As the restaurant which is specialized in buckwheat, the Pulnae-eum has simple menu with buckwheat noodles and several buckwheat dishes. As for alcohol, there is Memil Makgeolli(Raw buckwheat wine). I should have come at night and had it.

Assorted buckwheat is the popular menu in this restaurant. 3 dishes made of buckwheat, and potato cake are served. Potato is also Bongpyeong's specialty, so you can have diverse food on one dish. Isn't it plentiful?





Buckwheat dishes consist of three types; Memil Muk(Buckwheat Jelly), Memil Jeonbyeong(Buckwheat Crepe), and Memil Buchigi(Buckwheat Pancake). Unlike shiny and resilient Muk(Jelly food) produced in large quantities from factories, the buckwheat jelly has high buckwheat content. It looks a little crude, but is much softer and savory. It's common to find the Buckwheat Crepe which tastes much like Gimchi Mandu(Dumpling), thin Buckwheat Pancake with leaves of cabbage in Gangwon-do. Buckwheat dishes feature light and delicate flavor, so they taste simple. Children would like sweet and chewy potato cakes and adults mostly like rest of buckwheat dishes.

This is 'Memil Bibim Guksu(Spicy Noodles with buckwheat)' that came out when we almost finished the Assorted Buckwheat. Cool and sour soup came along and it was good to drink in the hot day.

There are plentiful red pepper seasoning and fresh vegetables, such as sliced cucumbers, carrots, and cabbages on the buckwheat noodles. The spicy buckwheat noodles has little spicy but savory flavor and fragrance. Frequently it's hard to taste native savory flavor of buckwheat, because people often put much sesame oil into the noodles. However, the seasoning of Pulnae-eum had natural buckwheat flavor even though it was spicy since it had been made of Cheongyang red pepper.

This is buckwheat noodles. Hot weather makes me slurp cold meat broth. The flavor of the broth taste sour and sweet and simple.

The noodles has soft texture because it includes more buckwheat flour than normal flour, but I liked it because this is what buckwheat dish is. Those who get used to eat wheat noodles are not likely to be satisfied with this type of crumbly and not chewy noodles.





After the meal, I walked off everywhere in the restaurant. Old farming equipments are exhibited in storage of the thatched house. Children like them. At the end of the yard, there are dogs and chicken house where a mother hen raises her chick. I haven't seen black chicks before. It seems like the chicken alerts to the strangers.

The Pulnae-eum is Buckwheat specialty restaurant. Its foods are not strong but simple and light as buckwheat food. It's convenient for visiting here, as this restaurant is located in 'Yi Hyo-seok Culture Village', the center of 'Buckwheat Flower Festival' and is close by Bongpyeong's representative tourist sites like Heungjeong valley, Pheonix park, Bongpyeong traditional market, etc.

Bongpyeong Memil Herb Jjinppang(Steamed bun with buckwheat)



This time, let's go eat desserts to Bongpyeong Traditional Market in 5 minute-distance by car from the Pulnae-eum restaurant. Every 2nd and 7 is the market days of Bongpyeong market. I thought there would be a few market opened but there was no one in the market because of the MERS. Well, it may be just the way that it could be… Anyways, this market is one of Bongpyeong's representative tourist sites with many attractions. There is 'Memil Herb Jjinppang(Steamed bun with buckwheat)' as famous as other buckwheat dishes here.

Bongpyeong Traditional Market is 5-day market opening every second and seventh. Bongpyeong Memil Herb Jjinppang(Buckwheat Herb Steamed Bun) is Bongpyeong's representative food that tourists should be lined up on market days and holidays.

Jjinppang(Steamed bun) has total 5 flavors. The basic flavor is made of red bean in the dough mixed with flour and buckwheat flour. Adding wormwood, black rice, buckwheat, sweet pumpkin on the basic dough makes each different flavor. 1 box including 10 buns costs 7,000 won. You can buy single one and ask smaller pack.

After cutting Jjinppang, it was full of red beans. It was very tender and not too sweet. If it was too sweet, I would have eaten only one, but I had many steamed buns due to its less sweet and savory flavor. Let's not think about I'm on a diet today...

You can have neatly packed buns for convenient trip. They are good for the snack during the trip or for the gift. It will be perfect to have buckwheat dishes as a meal at the Pulnae-eum restaurant and rinse your mouths with sweet steamed buns at the Bongpyeong Buckwheat Herb Steamed Bun.
