Alcohol has always been with human history. Since it is made naturally, maybe it is longer than human history. “Liquorium”, the museum of world alcohol culture, is located next to Tangeumho lake. The museum exhibit the history and kinds of alcohol, and the process to make it. You can make cocktail and raw rice wine on your own on the second floor. Liquorium is the combination of “liquor” and “rium.” It was open in 2005.

A huge distiller is displayed at the entrance of museum. It was used to make Scotch in Scotland for about 100 years. You may be curious about “Water drop of God”. Now, here we go!

Oak bottles around the world have been piled up at the entrance of the museum. I could smell the fragrant alcohol already.

A person in this picture looks both man and woman. It is “Dionysos”, the god of alcohol in Greek mythology. Many people think that the god would be a woman, but he is a man. Look at his muscle of arm. :-) The picture was painted by Michelangelo in 1475.

I said that the history of alcohol is longer than that of human. You can find a story about alcohol on mural painting of ancient Egypt 3,500 years ago. The picture above describes the process of making wine, from harvesting grapes to using earthenware. It also shows that people traded alcohol by ships in Nile river.

This is a brandy distiller, which is connected with many bottles by curved pipes. Korean hard liquor is made by the same way. Human beings have learned by their experiences on their own. It is curious. This distiller was made in cognac, France in 1830. It heats alcohol up on the right side, and leaves some cool alcohol return its originated place. Over-heated steam passes to water cooled cooler on the left side, and drops a drop of brandy.

There were so many exhibits in the museum, so I cannot show you all of them. But I will introduce several impressive ones. This is “wine exhibit hall”, which shows the name of famous wine, the history of wine, the way wine is brewed, evaluation method and keeping method. Real wine is put even in very old wines. If you have profound knowledge of wine, it will be interesting. :-)

The materials of cork stoppers and wine openers collected around the world are being exhibited. You should not pass away. There are so many interesting openers.

Many people are curious about “The portion of angel”. Real whiskey is being ripened. You can see the changing colors while ripening, and smell through the small hole. They have been ripened for 12 years, 17 years and 21 years respectively from the left. Some whiskey are evaporated while ripening. The evaporated amount is called as “The portion of angel”. The reason why old whiskey is more expensive is that you must pay the portion of angel. There are a lot of angels in Scotland and France, so you should pay more.

Various stories about beer and props are displayed in beer exhibit hall. Beer has so long history that it is written on code of Hammurabi. You can learn about world alcohol culture from the history of beer to the process of manufacturing vodka and tequila. The picture above is the collection of beer glass. Beer is more delicious in beer glass, right?

Beer should be open cheerfully. Many bottle opener around the world are displayed, and I like this one. I wish to have it! :-)





Word “wine” can be only used when grape is used. If you make wine with other fruits, you must call the name of fruit in front of the word, like omija wine and apple wine. Chunju is famous for omija and apple, so it makes a variety of alcohol with them. Now, I must drink an alcohol. I participated the activity to make cocktail.

You can drink beer, coffee or cocktail on the second floor of liquorium, and make some alcohol. Various alcohol around the world are being displayed here.

Wow, I know this vodka! It is Irish alcohol, the premium vodka named REYKA. It was selected as the world's top 10 vodka. “REYKA” means “steam” in Irish. The whole process is hand-made, so it is produced only a little. I drank it before, and it was fresh and soft.

Now, let's make a cocktail and drink it! All ingredients are prepared. Today, I will make “Sunshine”.

Granadi syrup is prepared to make vodka, apple juice and orange juice. Pure vodka is used in cocktail since it doesn't have any color, taste and smell. So it makes other ingredients stand out.
Non alcohol cocktail can be made for children.




At first, put one ounce of apple, two ounce of orange juice, one ounce of vodka and one ice. There is no way to mix, so you can do whatever you want. I put two ounce of vodka to make deep.





And shake and dance to Gangnam style.

Lastly, put a drop of granadi syrup, and it is done. Red colored syrup makes beautiful gradation.

Red color comes up after a minute. Like its name, it looks that sunshine comes up. It is sweet and delicious.



I think experience is really important during a trip. Looking around some tourist attractions and having a nice meal would be wonderful. But you can learn the history and culture of the region through experience. There are a lot of activities like making traditional makgeolli and wine. I hope you make a wonderful memory in Chungju.
