Beopjusa Temple of Songnisan Mountain

I visited Songnisan mountain in midwinter that is popular with many people in fall. I just wanted to take a picture of pine trees covered with snow. In the early 1990s, when I was a single, I visited Songnisan mountain with my parents. And in the late 1990s, I visited again with my wife. I remember that it took a long time to arrive. I had to drive national highway for two hours, and go inside the curved road for one and half an hour to reach Songnisan mountain. Fortunately, however, I can be easily accessible to the mountain after driving for 15 kilometers along Cheongju-Sangju expressway. So I can save over an hour.

Songnisan mountain is 1,058 meters high. It raises in the middle of Sobaek mountains, the range of the Taebaek mountains. When Jinpyo reached here in 784, all cows knelt down in front of him. The farmers who saw this entered the mountain following Jinpyo. The word “Sokri”, which means leaving mundane world, was originated from it.

Jeongipum Pine Tree :

You will meet Jeongipum Pine Tree in the middle of the road to Beopjusa Temple of Songnisan Mountain. It is No.103 natural monument. It is about 600 years old, and 17 meters high. It has been cherished by many people. I hope to be born as Jeongipum Pine Tree after I died.

A legend says the tree made a road for King Sejo when he visited Beopjusa Temple of Songnisan Mountain in 1464. So he granted official rank “Jeongipum” to the pine tree. (a cabinet position now) Although it has the trace of a surgical operation, the tree is still fresh and beautiful. It has been loved by many people for a long time, but damaged by pine leaf gall midge disease 30 years ago, strong wind and heavy snow. Many people feel sorry for its shabby appearance.

Beopjusa Temple :

“Beopjusa temple was established in the Silla dynasty period, and has kept a number of relics and remains. It has been called the cradle of maitreya faith.”

-The website of Beopjusa temple-

Maitreya statues had been constructed since 1939, but ceased for a while. But they had been reconstructed again from March 1963 to 1964 by the contribution of Park Chung-hee.

The road to Songnisan mountain is so beautiful. Pine trees and broadleaf trees are grown straight.

Some good words are written on every places of the trees.

Many people are climbing the mountain to the top. And I saw the guide map of Songnisan mountain national park at first.

This word shows the attractiveness of Beopjusa Temple. It heals the heart of hurt people.

HoseoJeilgaram :

Visitors may see the appendages of Beopjusa temple at first. It says it is the best garam in Hoseo region. I will explain the meaning of garam. It means the place to practice asceticism for monks like temple.

The sky is blue and transparent. The air is cold. They make the scenery even more beautiful.

You can see Budojeon with sarira pagodas on the right side. It is so straight and modernistic that it is less elegant than Gochang Seonunsa temple.
