In this cold wind, everybody would think of one bowl of hot Kalguksu for once. This restaurant is not famous among tourists but well-known to Hapcheon citizens. Well, wherever you go, you’d better ask people who live there if you want to have a nice meal, and as I asked a few people on the street they all pointed to this restaurant. So I checked it out.

Sunhalmeoni Sonkalguksu is right next to Hapcheon Intercity Bus Terminal so it’s also good for travelings to walk.

It’s early for lunchtime so the restaurant was kinda empty. It was small and neat inside.

Rarely enough, they make dough and cut noodles by hands. It takes a lot of time to spread the big dough with a bat and it seems like a hard-working. The noodles at the market contain gluten for chewy texture but it’s not so good for health, so if you make it by hands gluten is naturally formed. So it’s softer than the noodles made by machine.

As I saw the chef making dough, I already wonder how it would taste. There are only three dishes here, Jeontong(traditional) Kalguksu, Deulkkae(perilla seeds) Kalgulsu and Eomnamu(kalopanax) Kalguksu. We ordered one Ddeulkkae Kalguksu and Eomnamu Kalguksu that we can’t eat in a regular restaurant.

While I was waiting for the food, the memos written by customers caught my eyes. And what’s this? Actors Ji Seong and Jeong Woo-seong came here! I guess they must’ve been here when they were shooting something in Hapcheon Cine Theme Park.

I heard some radio and it’s coming from here. Quiet radio sound rather than loud music was so friendly like in a small country town.

Firstly served dish was Ddeulkkae Kalguksu. As you can see it’s a lot.

I could smell the strong scent of perilla seeds. In the soup, I could see noodles, mushrooms, potatoes and chopped seaweeds. When the perilla seeds are big, they tend to taste rough and unpleasant but they were just soft and flavoury.

The noodles made by hands were properly chewy and soft. If you expect thick and gooey noodles you might be disappointed but I think the noodles should be thin for you to enjoy the strong scent and taste of soup. The taste was harmonized with the texture.

Especially the soup was strong and thick so that my wife finished all of it saying that it’s like perilla seeds porridge.

Secondly served food is Eomnamu DakKalguksu(noodle soup with chicken with kalopanax). Kalopanax is a kind of herb that is good for arthritis, especially it goes well with protein-rich chicken that it’s a good health food.

The one thing I should mention about food in Sunhalmoni Sonkalguksu is that the soup is flavoury and aftertaste is neat. It’s because they use natural ingredients and boil enough rather than using artificial flavor enhancers. I could see pieces of kalopanax that is known to be good for health, pumpkins, chives and spicy chili peppers.

The noodles were soft and thin that was easy to swallow. Chicken soup might be greesy for some people but with the help of chili peppers, it was clean but not spicy at all. My wife didn’t leave even one drop of Ddeulkkae Kalguksu and I finished Eomnamu DakKalguksu. We just wanted to alleviate our hunger but we were so satisfied.

The dish that makes Kalguksu taste even better is this fresh kimchi. In some regions, people put salted seafood in this which I don’t find it tasty but here, they use properly spicy and salty sauce that tasted so nice.

Sunhalmoni SonKalguksu does not artificial flavor enhancers in noodles or soup but cook with fresh ingredients by hands only! The noodles are soft and the soup is flavory and neat. So anybody can enjoy the food here, which is why I strongly suggest you to try it!
