People say “Andong on the left side and Hamyang on the right side” when talking about yangban village in the Joseon period. Hampyeong and Andong have produced a lot of classical scholars. Gaepyeong hanok village is the hometown of Ding Ruchang, the great master of Neo-Confucianism. The history of the village is over 500 years, which is older than that of the Joseon dynasty period. Local people are living in all of hanoks in the village. I got impressed by kind people. There are a number of old houses so that you can look around them with ease.

Gaepyeong hanok village is located in Jigok-myeon, 8 kilometers far from Hamyang-eup, Hamyang-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do. There are 60 hanoks that were built 100 years ago. It is a new tourist spot.

I was the only traveler in the large village. It was so pleasant to look around flowers alone. “Gaepyeong” was named because the village is located between two brooks. Two brooks gather at the signboard of Gaepyeong village at the entrance of the village. Local people call the wide field near the village as “Gaedeul”.

The course is not special. You would look around whole of the village after walking every road. Jeong family and Noh family are living in Gaepyeong hanok village. While wandering a road, I found the house of Noh family.

The front gate is so beautiful. The door handle, the loop and door-lock are friendly. Ok, here we go. The door was open, but I closed it to take a picture. You should not go inside if the door is closed. But most of doors in the village were open. I didn't see old houses with closed door.

I can see large detached house after going inside through the tall gate. This house is the head family house(No. 343 cultural assets material) built by Noh Sook-dong in 1820. You can find the architecture style of the late Joseon dynasty period. It has been well kept.

The house is so cozy and elegant. The house is “ㅁ” shaped. I asked an old lady whether I can look around the house. Then she welcomed me. I chatted with her for a long time. I was happy to be welcomed.

The all scenery of the village are amazing. Low roof tile wall, mountain and brook are beautiful. The pine tree habitat under the low hill and curved roads are impressive.

I can see the whole view of Gaepyeong hanok village on the hill. The village, the brook, field and Deogyusan mountain are so rhythmical.

This is the old house of Noh Champan. Recently, go game between AlpaGo and Lee Se-Dol was the topic of conversation. Noh Guen-yeong, who was the number one go player in Korea, was born in this house in the late Joseon period. He was called “Noh sa cho”, and he helped the poor in his whole life. He appealed the King to remit tax in severe drought. So local people built this detached house as a token of thanks. In Japanese colonial era, he defeated a number of Japanese go players, so he was called as the master of go in Joseon.

I was walking the alley outside the old house. Then a senior citizen asked me “where are you from?” So I answerd, “I came here to look around the beautiful village. Take care. Bye bye.” She repaid a salutation. :-)

I have been to many hanok villages so far, but this one is the most natural hanok village. The mossy wall made of soil and stones and tiled roof are so friendly. Chickens are pecking at feed in the bamboo field, and fresh green sprouts are shoting up in the vegetable garden. The chickens are lining up. :-)

It looks like the house of an important person. This is “Illdoo old house”. Ding Ruchang is the representative person in Hamyang. His hometown was Hadong, Gyeongsangnam-do, but he became Hamyang citizen after moving to here. Five Jeongnyeopaes are hanging under the eaves of the tall gate. They were given to devoted sons and loyal subjects. They were officially recognized by the country.

You can see “ㄱ”shaped detached house on the high embankment after entering the tall gate. Illdoo old house is the typical house of yangban in Gyeongsang district. In particular, it was shoot in the TV drama “Toji” and “Damo”. Those who watched the dramas would remember this house.

I found the huge word “Chunghyojeol ui” under the eave of the detached house. Some people say it was written by Heungseon Daewongun. I can see the long history of the signboard as hanji is attached one over another. Several hanji have been attached because people have copied when the word is faded.

Ding Ruchang was punished after “Muosahwa”, and extiled to Hamgyong province. And he got Posthumous execution during “Gapjjasahwa” in 1504. But he is one of “Dongbangohyeon” along with Kim Gwang-pil, Jo Gwang-jo, Lee Un-jeok and Lee whang. This house has been called “Ding Ruchang old house”, “Illdoo old house” and “Jeong Byeong-ok”. Ok, here we go!

There is another detached house beyond the wall of the detached house. The family would have had a lot of offspring or guests. You can find the main building on the left, the ancestral shrine in the middle and the separate house on the right after passing the Ilgangmun door. It means the door made of two pillars.

NIKON D750 | f/11.0 | iso 100 | 2016:03:07 13:23:59 | Flash did not fire, compulsory flash mode | 24mm

The main building looks so cozy. It is “ㅁ” shaped building with the Golden Lawn Grass, the detached house and the outer-wing building. The distinction between the sexes was strong in the Joseon dynasty period. Women should pass three doors like the front gate, the Ilgangmun door and the inner gate. There is one pond in the yard of the main building. There are only five ponds in Gaepyeong village. I heard that the village has been radically waned since people digged the pond in the elementary school in Japanese colonial era.

I met “Hadong Jeong old house” in the alley lastly. The tree and the golden lawn grass in the front yard are so beautiful. Originally, the village was for Gyeongju Kim family and Hadong Jeong family. But Pungcheon Noh family lived together after the 15th century. Now, Hadong Jeong family and Pungcheon Noh family are living in the village.

Solsongju (Traditional Korean Liquor) with 530 years of tradition is famous in Gaepyeong hanok village. It is an alcohol made of pine needles. You should try it if you visit here.

Gaepyeong hanok village is different from other hanok villages. The shop for sampling a beverage is the only store. All local people are nice and kind as it is not a famous tourist spot. If you visit here, you should look around the village quietly, and say hello to the local people. We should make an effort to keep the tradition of the village.
