I'm going to introduce the eastern part of Jeju.

The places I visited in the eastern part of Jeju were Seongsanghang(Seongsan coastal harbor), Woodo, and Manjanggul (Manjang cave).

Seongsanhang 성산항

It's located in the most eastern part of Jeju, and there is a port going to Woodo and Seongsan-ilchulbong.

Map

I planned to watch sunrise at Seongsan-ilchulbong and go to Woodo; thus, I booked a room around it.

The one you see in the picture is Seongsan-ilchulbong. When I arrived at my accommodation, there were only few hours left for sunset so I decided to claim Seongsan-ilchulbong next time and I just took a picture of it from far away.

However, therewas a heavy and too much sea fog the next day so I could not watch sunrise and gave up claiming Seongsan-ilchulbong. Actually, some people told me that youhave to be lucky because there are only few days you can see the wonderful and beautiful sunrise. I doubted it at first, but surprisingly, I only saw a sea fog and nothing like sunrise.

The sea fog started from the night. Originally, I should see a shadow of Seongsan-ilchulbong at the back by this time.

I found dried tile fishes around. You can commonly see tile fishes getting dried up and they sell those in markets.

My accommodationwas located in Ojori which you can find across Gabmun bridge from Seongsan-ri. There are lots of restaurants where you can eat sea cucumber, sea squirt, conch, abalone, and sashimi in this town. I ate too much abalone in Swiso-kkak, hence I decided to eat sea cucumber, sea squirt, and abalone sashimi instead of abalone porridge.

I went to any restaurant near my accommodation.

Map

The restaurant is approximately located in the map above. This restaurant has also abalone farm. The original menu was a set consist of sea squirt, conch, and abalone, but I asked them to change conch to sea cucumber.

It finally appeared to me. During my trip in Jeju, I had many chances to eat abalone, but not sea cucumber or sea squirt unless I look for to eat them.

I could not explain its taste, but if you like sea cucumber and sea squirt, you can taste a fresh taste here.

Woodo 우도

After I failed to visit Seongsan-ilchulbong, I immediately went to Woodo. You can buy a roundtrip trip for passenger ship at cost of 5,500won at Seongsanpo-jonghab passenger terminal.

Woodo is a small island so even though you did not plan to visit here, you can go there and look around for a day or half day. You can rent and enjoy bicycle, scooter, or ATV in Woodo.

You can easily see horses in Woodo. You can also experience simple horseback riding.
You can go around, take a picture at the place you want, and can slowly watch around.

Woodo is famous for conch so you can see artworks of conch shape.

It's lighthouse park of Woodo. There is a small lighthouse at the waterfront made up of rocks.

You can see some towers made by rocks. They make a wish while building a rock tower.

There is a sandy beach in Woodo. The picture above is Hagosudong beach.

The other beach named Geom-meolrae beach is famous for magnificent view of Dongankyung cave rather than its beach. When I visited, there was a heavy sea fog so I just briefly checked them out.

If it's a sunny day, you can go down and see the beach and Dongankyung cave. When you go around Woodo once, you can see many seafood ddukbaegi, abalone porridge, or sashimi of conch, sea cucumber, or sea squirt, but I tried seafood ramen.

PENTAX MX-1 | f/2.0 | iso 100 | 2013:06:05 12:28:06 | Flash did not fire, compulsory flash mode | 8.1mm

Seafood ramen in Woodo had two abalones, sea cucumber, umbrella shells, and common stalked barnacle.

PENTAX MX-1 | f/1.8 | iso 100 | 2013:06:05 12:30:17 | Flash did not fire, compulsory flash mode | 6mm

It was plenty for ramen. (There are four abalones in the picture because two of them are my wife's.)

The seafood ramen is 7,000won. Normally, seafood ramen in Woodo costs around 7,000won to 10,000won. Ramen was just common, but those seafood in ramen made it more delicious.

I met a crab while going around Woodo. I was not able to take a picture of it in detail because it escaped too fast.

Manjang cave 만장굴

Next place is Manjang cave. It's a natural cave created by sinking of lava. Its value of geology is high; hence, it's registered in Unesco.

Map

Manjang cave is located in the middle of Woodo and Jeju city. It's 26km away from Jeju international airport.

PENTAX MX-1 | f/2.5 | iso 100 | 2013:06:05 14:36:30 | Flash did not fire, compulsory flash mode | 24mm

The formation of Manjang cave is estimated about seven million years ago. It's 13.4km including connected caves around, but only 1km from the entrance is open for tourists. You can only go 1km from the entrance, see lava column, and go back to the entrance. You have to walk total of 2km in the cave.

PENTAX MX-1 | f/1.8 | iso 500 | 2013:06:05 15:01:58 | Flash did not fire, compulsory flash mode | 6mm

The entrance looks like as if you're entering a different world.

PENTAX MX-1 | f/1.8 | iso 800 | 2013:06:05 15:04:57 | Flash did not fire, compulsory flash mode | 6mm

Unfortunately, it's very dark inside the cave so it's not good for picture taking.

PENTAX MX-1 | f/2.8 | iso 800 | 2013:06:05 15:14:46 | Flash did not fire, compulsory flash mode | 6mm

Nevertheless, there are some lights and explanation at main spots so there is no problem in walking and watching around.

PENTAX MX-1 | f/1.8 | iso 800 | 2013:06:05 15:09:53 | Flash did not fire, compulsory flash mode | 6mm

There are some potholes and puddles so you have to watch out your feet to not get wet.

PENTAX MX-1 | f/2.0 | iso 800 | 2013:06:05 15:28:47 | Flash did not fire, compulsory flash mode | 8.1mm

From 1km away from the entrance, there is a lava column. It was created when lava was falling down from the dented floor and got harden. This lava column in Manjang cave is 7.8m high.

Kimnyeng-seongsegi beach 김녕성세기해변

There is Kimnyeng-seongsegi beach when you ride a car and go a bit from Manjang cave.

Map

"A" in green in the picture is where Manjang cave is located. Kimnyeng-seongsegi beach is about 4.87km away from the cave.

PENTAX MX-1 | f/4.0 | iso 100 | 2013:06:05 16:17:48 | Flash did not fire, compulsory flash mode | 6mm

Kimnyeng-seongsegi beach has a wide sandy beach together with an aerogenerator. The sands here are soft and light compared to other sands.

PENTAX MX-1 | f/2.5 | iso 100 | 2013:06:05 16:29:05 | Flash did not fire, compulsory flash mode | 24mm

When you walk in the beach, you can see the aerogenerator rotating.
