Taebaek Coal Museum: Cheonjedan-gil 195, Taebaek-si

Coal was once the main energy resource of Korea. You can see miners who mined coal in poor surroundings. I visited the museum once before. But I wanted to come again since it is well organized.

Construct Outline of the Museum: Coal is the only natural resource of Korea. It has played a pivotal role in supplying fuel for family and industries, so it has contributed to the economic development of the country. However, with the development of material civilization and increasing demand of clean energy, it has been radically declined. The museum shows the development of coal industry, and historical facts of coal. It lets people know the achievement of miners who were the pillars of industry. The museum serves as the experience center of coal industry. -by the website of the museum

100% hand-made briquette was made by husband and wife in a front yard.

After that, people searched for a coal seam more and more, and they became to wear masks and equipments.

These are the phrases hanging on the entrance of mine. “Dad, you should always keep safety, security and punctuality in mind.”

These are the coal corporations which once enjoyed prosperity.

This is a model house of a miner. I can imagine the saying of a wife for her husband. “Honey, cheer up! And please work safely.”

The children would play being covered with black briquette dust, I guess.

This is a single room. Striking clock, light bulb, three pillows and a blanket. These are so simple, huh? You may feel inconvenient since you are living in an age of materialism.

This is the entrance for the elevator toward underground tunnel. While seeing the safety poster, I imagine the daily life of a miner.

These are the equipments of miners in the Joseon dynasty period. He is mining coal in the picture. He wore white clothes, but entered the dark mine. He looks so exhausted.

He wore a head flashlight, but mined coal with a pickax.

He is pulverizing coal with an equipment. He looks so exhausted. He is having lunch in the mine with full of dust. He might be so painful because he cannot have fresh air even when he has a meal.

he equipments have become bigger, but labor is still painful. More machines and equipments have been used to mine coal from deep underground. But profitability has been deteriorated after the needs for gas and oil have been radically increased. Even worse, cheap minerals from Australia and China have dwarfed domestic industries of coal, tungsten and iron ore.
