Chunhyang
is the most famous figure in Namwon, Jeollabuk-do. So there are a lot
of stories about Chunhyang in Namwon. There are Orijeong,
Nunmulbangjuk, Bakseokteo, Boeseonbat, the tomb of Chunhyang and
Chunhyang Theme Park. I think Gwanghallu is the place where you can
feel the love of Chunhyang and Mongnyong. Okay, here we go!

The
wall in front of Gwanghalluwon Garden looks so beautiful at night,
huh? The atmosphere is great as it is raining. Gwanghalluwon Garden
is within 25 minutes from Namwon station, so the transportation is
very convenient.

You
can walk from the south gate hanging a plaque named “Cheongheobu”.
Human being can go to the world of heaven through the door. It opens
for free from 6 p.m. It opens free from 7 p.m. from April to October.

The
atmosphere is great after the sunset. This is Wanwoljeong pavilion
across Ojakgyo bridge. This was built in 1969. The royal palace in
the moon has been reproduced to Gwanghalluwon Garden. On the
contrary, Wanwoljeong pavilion was built to enjoy the world of the
moon. “Wan(玩)”
means a play.

Gwanghallu
pavilion is just across the pond. It was named Gwanghallu by Jeong
In-ji, the governor of Jeolla-do. Korean traditional garden is always
beautiful.

Korea
has four palaces; Bubyeongnu of Pyongyang, Chokseongnu Pavilion of
Jinju, Yeongnamnu Pavilion of Miryang and Gwanghalluwon Garden of
Namwon. And Gwanghalluwon Garden is the best among them. The pond
signifies the Milky Way. There is Ojakgyo bridge which means the
meeting of the two love-stars (on the night of July 7 of the lunar
calendar).

Gwanghalluwon
Garden is made of two royal palaces. Three sides of Ikru are made of
floors, and surrounded with the railing. The first floor can be used
in winter thanks to ondol(Korean floor heating system) and wall. That
is interesting.

The backside is also interesting. Special royal palace was built to prevent the slanting of the building. It is the first case in Korean architecture history. The building looks more splendid. It is No. 281 treasure.

The
reflection of Yeongjugak is so beautiful, huh? I couldn't see
anything at night. So I went to the hotel, and planned to come back
in the morning tomorrow.

So,
it is the next morning. I paid 2,500 won for admission fee. Now I can
see something that I couldn't see yesterday. 450 years old hackberry
is standing right in front of the door of Cheongheobu. It was planted
in the era of King Myeongjong.

This
is Yeongjugak pavilion in the morning. It is still so beautiful.
Ruwon has been known for the place where Chunhyang and Lee Mong-ryong
met. But in fact, it has an important meaning in the history of
Korean landscaping. Backyards of the royal palaces of Joseon were
built based on EumYangOHaeng Theory and the theory of divination
based on topography. And those landscaping culture have been spread
to ordinary people.

There
is a huge broad and flat rock in front of the pond. It was moved from
the east gate of Namwon castle. The round holes in the surface of the
rock are called “Seonghyeol(性穴)’.
They are found in the castle of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress or the huge
rocks of a village. Seonghyeol is the symbol that wishes fecundity
and abundance. It is an act of spell in Korean tradition. I wonder
who did it.

There
is Ojakgyo bridge over the huge pond in front of Gwanghallu. It is
the rectangle with the proportion of 1:2. There are three artificial
islands here. There are pavilions in two islands, and a tree in one
island. They were modeled after Three God Mountain where the God
lives. All structures in the small garden were made based on the
imagination of Joseon people.

There
is a thatched house with wide yard at the corner of ruwon. This is
House of Wolmae, the background of Chunhyangjeon. Chunhyang and Lee
Mong-ryong got married in this house. It is funny to see the story of
Chunhyangjeon.

Spring
has come in House of Wolmae! Grass is growing in the vegetable
garden. Bean paste soup made of it is so delicious!

Is
this the place where Lee Mong-ryong fell in love with Seong
Chun-hyang? You can experience a stick punishment here.
NIKON D750 | f/9.0 | iso 100 | 2016:03:08 12:30:32 | Flash did not fire, compulsory flash mode | 24mm
You
can find a shrine surrounded with low wall and bamboo in the trail.
The portrait of Chunhyang has been kept to honor her fidelity. Her
father would be “Seong Ui-an”, the governor of Namwon. So her
tombstone is standing right next to that of Seong Ui-an. Who knows?
:-)

Some
people say Chunhyang was the real figure. Ugly Chunhyang had a
relationship with the son of the governor of Namwon. She waited for
him, and died with bearing a grudge. After she was dead, Namwon had a
bad crop every year. So people wrote “Chunhyangjeon” to comfort
her spirit. Believe or not. :-)

Gwanghalluwon Garden is a huge place. It has become larger after the extension works for several times. It is the must-go tourist spot in Namwon. Why don't you visit here before going to Guyong Valley of Jirisan Mountain?
