Kim Young-mo's Patisserie : One of the top three master's bakery in Seoul

There is a saying in Korea that tigers leave their skins and humans leave their names when they die. It's a big thing that a person's name becomes a brand. Especially when it comes to food, The store with the name with the producer is more reliable.

Have you ever heard of the name 'Kim Young-mo'? This is the name of the No.6 Korean confectionary master. Today, I visited a bakery named after a master, Kim Young-mo's patisserie.

Kim Young-mo's patisserie opened in Seocho-dong in 1982. After then, he opened many stores in Dogok Tower, Sinbanpo, Jamsil, Daechi-dong and more in Gangnam area. The one I visited today is Sinbanpo.

I can smell the pleasant bread from the hallway. As soon as I opened the door, I could feel joy with my eyes and nose. I feel like my barn is full of bread, cakes and cookies.

Is this heaven? A huge showcase with far more cakes than any other bakery is catching my eyes. Obviously, fancy cakes are more intense than plain bread. Following my instinct, I focused my attention on the showcase.

My god, each of these adorable decorated cakes show off its beauty. I suddenly eager to buy it enough to think if there is someone on a birthday.

This carnation cake made of fine chocolate stands out even more in May, when Parent's Day is held. I promise to buy that cake on Parent's Day next year. (On Parents Day, Korean parents are usually pinning the carnation flower in right chest.)

Macaroons, which are in vogue these days, are also displayed neatly.

It's good for a gift.

I can't help but wonder which bread to choose. That's when 'Recommended by master' sign helps.

Then I saw this sign, 'Best 7 to try at Kim Young-mo's Patisserie!'

I thought the most famous bread was a baguette sandwich, but there were even more top menus.

So, what I chose are, a raisin bread and scone, which are familiar to me,

And a baguette sandwich which was the purpose of this visit.(The Sinbanpo branch doesn't have tables in the store, so you can only takeout)

First, let's see the baguette sandwich. There is wet wipes packed with it. The sandwich is about a span and a half big. I feel that it is rather big compared to the price of 8,000 won.

It's neat in the sandwich, lettuce, cheese, ham pickles, sauce. The outside of the baguette is crispy and moist inside. In fact, the biggest problem with sandwich is that the bread gets wet, but the baguette sandwich from Kim Young-mo's was still fine as it's just made. I feel like this would be the sandwich that my French mother made for me if I was born in France.


An acquaintance who went to France said that the most memorable thing was baguette sandwich at the Seine River than the Louvre Museum or any other famous tourist attractions.

At that time, I didn't really understand it, but I guess this baguette sandwich would give me a French flavor.


So I searched web and found that Kim Young-hoon, the second son of master Kim Young-mo became the first Korean to become the master of ice confectionery in France. This is a big deal cause it's Europe, the homeland of confectionery and baking, especially France's state-designated master MOF title. I think it's surprising as a foreigner becoming a Pansori(Korean musical storytelling performance) master singer.

After the impression for the baguette sandwich, I try natural yeast raisin bread. Walnuts and raisins are properly contained in each bite.

What I thought of eating two kinds of bread is that the basics are important. The bread part should be good.

Scone is one of my favorite bread, and these plain scone and earl grey scone was also very satisfying. Moreover, the more I chew, the more flavor of black tea comes out, leaving a lingering aroma in my mouth.

These days, breads have became snacks, not meals, because they emphasize too much sweetness. But all the breads at Kim Young-mo's are good for a light meal. I want to visit again to taste other breads.

Each bread is individually packed. Every corners are clean. However, the baguette sandwiches in the showcase are a bit concerned because they are exposed.
