There is nowhere to go over 10 p.m. in most small town tourist attractions. In addition, you should have dinner at convenience store since restaurants are closed. Like the lyrics of popular song, “Yeosu night sea”, you can enjoy beautiful night view and delicious foods far into the night. It is the tent bar street of Gyodong market. You can fully enjoy your travel because it is close to Yeosu downtown.

Gyodong market, which is within 10 minutes from the famous tourist attractions like Odongdo Island, Yeosu expo park and ocean cable car, stands for Yeosu. People trade various seafood in the daytime. But it totally changed to the tent bar street at night.

Tent bars stand in a line along the water way of Yeondeungcheon. It may be different, but tent bars usually open around 5 p.m. and close until there are no customers. I will visit indoor tent bar today. There is No. 23 Tent bar nearby a brook, too. But I will not visit there.

Here it is! This is “No.23 indoor tent bar” that is the popular restaurant in the tent bar street of Gyodong market. Outdoor tent bar is elegant. But I chose here due to the night wind in cold winter. The owner originally operated outdoor tent bar.

You should not confuse the shop name as No, 23 indoor tent bar is so popular here. You should check the map or address as it moved to new place on 4th day of December. She said she will move right next day. I must have missed the chance. :-)

Some bar snacks have been served even though I did not order a menu. The menu is only “Seafood Samhap”. You can only choose the size, “big, middle and small”. I ordered small, as I had only two parties. It costs 30,000 won. The order was made automatically.


“Seafood Samhap” is the representative menu of the tent bars of Gyodong market. It is also called “Yeosu Samhap” since it stands for Yeosu. Samhap is Fermented Skate and Steamed Pork Slices Served with Kimchi. Pen shell, small octopus and shrimp are the main seafoods. So it is good food both for meal and side dish. But I found some people ordered different seafood menu while discussing recipe with the owner.

I skimed off conch after a long time as I had done in my childhood. It was salty, but delicious. So I drank several cups of Soju before main side dishes have been served.

I should drink “Ipssaeju” in Jeollanam-do! It really suits my palate. In particular, women like it as it tastes soft due to maple syrup.

Finally, famous “Seafood Samhap” has been served after I drank soju with conch. At first, you should put pork belly, shrimps, onions and garlics. And then fry with Kimchi, small octopus, adductor muscle and vegetables. Seasoning is not needed. The soup of the ingredients are the real seasoning!

The only seasoning is Kimchi. So food is delicious when Kimchi is delicious. It was well fermented kimchi. I think it is the secret of No. 23 indoor tent bar.

I put some vegetables when seafoods and meats were done. You should eat spinach by frying it, and napa cabbage and lettuce by wraping them. All vegetables are fresh because the tent bar is located in the market.

Small octopus and adductor muscles have been served in time. I ordered small size, but two small octopus and enough adductor muscles have been served. The owner said she usually serves a large small octopus in small sized Samhap. But the ingredients were so small on that day that she served two of them.

When pork is well done, put small octopus and adductor muscles on it. The staff member frys by herself when there are few customers. But if not, you should well listen to the explanation and fry on your own.

Fry small octopus and adductor muscles evenly with Kimchi and spinach. Kimchi is the only seasoning. Is it delicious, seriously?

The food becomes delicious after the soup of Kimchi boils the ingredients down. You should put all ingredients after pork is done. If you put Kimchi lastly and fry ingredients for a long time, small octopus and adductor muscles would be tough. If you don't follow the right process, you would eat tough, burned food. So I explain it in detail. Don't you think you have to have a nice meal at large cost?

When the small octopus is done, just enjoy it! The combination of clean soup of seafoods, greasy pork and spicy Kimchi is perfect. It tastes clean as it has been fried only with fermented kimchi without other seasonings. So I want to eat more and more. But it is not sweet and salty as compared with the food of Seoul and Gyeonggi with strong seasonings. So you might be disappointed. Then you should boil the food with Kimchi for a long time!

It is delicious when you eat the food after wrapping it with lettuce or other vegetables. Eating seafood, Kimchi and pork altogether is great, too. The combination of soft small octopus, aromatic pork belly and spicy Kimchi is perfect. It is delicious without seasoning!

It is so cold day, so you would better have the food while lighting the gas. Put small octopus and adductor muscles on the vegetables to make them not be tough. It would be delicious when you eat them with the soup of Kimchi.

You must eat duruchigi(Korean bouillabaisse) with fried rice. There was not on the menu, but the owner served a bowl of rice(2,000 won). When the staff members are busy, you should do by yourself. You should fry the rice on your own, too. Well, there are few restaurant where staff members fry the rice by themselves, in fact. Some restaurants put the words “Fry the rice on your own” on the wall as so many tourists from the capital area asked the service. :-)

Anyways, you must eat fried rice lastly. I was full enough, but I would be sorry if I didn't have it. I ate away a bowl of delicious seafood kimchi fried rice. It is a skill of God. The tent bar moved to other place now, but it would be not hard to find it with a map. Why don't you rest up with Samhap at night during the trip to Yeosu?
