Cherry blossoms have beauty and pain. At least in Korea. Over 360 thousands of cherry blossoms were planted in Jinhae during Japanese colonial era. Cultural Heritages of early modern times remain around Joongwon roundabout route in Jinhae. National Archives of Korea designated this village to “Archives Love Village”. I strongly recommend it to those who go on a trip to Jinhae. Okay, here we go!

Oh, I must tell you something. Bicycle system named “Noobiza” has been well organized in Jinhae(Changwon). Even though you are not a citizen of Changwon(Jinhae), you can ride a bicycle for 24 hours at 1,000 won. Actually, many Changwon citizens are using the system. The membership fee is only 30,000 won for a year. So you can take advantage of it every day. There are a number of bicycle rental center every places of the city. So you can borrow and return a bicycle at any place.

I am going to start the trip to Goonhang village at Jinhae naval port village history museum in Palgeori(Joongwon roundabout route). It houses 350 historic documents and old pictures of Jinhae. The site was originally a fertile field in 1912. But Japan took over the land, and made a plan city. The Japanese government createda radical road with 1,200 years of hackberry as the center. Except the modern architectures you will see today, all roads were built 100 years ago. I am going to go inside with a booklet.

Jinhae has a specialty with a long history. That is “Bean snack”. The snack is made of baked bean dough. It is so delicious. You can buy it anywhere in Jinhae. It costs 1,000 won. The snack has been loved for 100 years. It is good to take a walk while eating this snack.

I am going to visit octagonal pavilion after getting out of Jinhae naval port village museum. In fact, it is a hexagonal pavilion, not octagonal. It is usually called “a building which has a spire”. It was built in 1920. It was a gisaeng house at that time. It overlooks Joongwon roundabout route. It was the landmark of the 1920s. Now, there is a steakhouse named “Sooyang hall”.

This is Changwon Jinhae post office. (No.291 historical site) It was built in 1912. Now it is used for a post exhibition hall. In the late World War 2, Japan was lacking in materials for weapon. So it cut off all of copperplate and railing of the post office. The roof here was restored in 1984. It is Russian style, and it had been used for a post office until 2000.

You don't have to worry about foods during the naval port festival. Street vendors are lined up in the road to Jehwangsan observatory. It is so funny. Cherry blossom bread is a specialty of Jinhae. You can smell floral fragrance when you bite cherry blossom-shaped bread.

You can find a wooden building built in 1912 after getting out of the post office. Black and white two-storied building is well matched with the signboard named “Black and white”. The ivy and the signboard “Since 1955” are telling you the history of the building. I am going to go inside after opening the old double doors.

It looks like an old coffee shop. It is equipped with DJ box and a piano. A special exhibition for the artist Yoo Taek-ryeol is held at one side. Her daughter, the pianist Yoo Gyeong-a, is telling the memory of 104 years old building. A concert is held in every 5 p.m. on Saturday.

“Black and white(Heukbaek)” has served as a detached house for Korean modern artists. Many painters, composers and poets like Lee Joong-seop, Kim Choon-su, Yoon I-sang and Seo Jeong-joo would talk about a life and the art in here. The painting tools were dominated by the artist Lee Joong-seop. The painter Yoo Taek-ryeol bought “Kalmen coffee shop” in 1955, and named it “Black and white(Heukbaek)”, the color of a magpie.

Old pictures are exhibited in the middle of the road. Pictures of Jinhae from the 1920s to modern times are exhibited. Some people gathered to receive rice and others are selling goods. It is interesting.

This building looks quite old, huh? It sells famous danpatjuk(sweet red-bean porridge with small rice dumplings) in Jinhae. Every people recommend it. I was sorry that I already had a snack.

You will see Japanese house after walking the road from Jinhae post office. The first floor is a shop, and the second floor is a house. I think the building was for the public servants at that time.

And you will find the Japanese navy hospital presient's house. It is a traditional Japanese house. The houses for the soldiers were located nearby a troop. But the house of the hospital president was located between private houses. Now it is a restaurant named “Seonhak Gomtang”. But it was closed when I visited. The building has been perfectly preserved.

I wonder how old buildings have been preserved so well. Some modern buildings are located near old buildings. Some remodeled buildings were for rent.

There is another special building on the oppsite side of Sooyang hall. This is “Wonhaeroo”, a Chinese restaurant in 1956. It is still operated. It was open by “Jang Hyeon-cheol”, the Chinese communist army in Korean war. The president Chiang Kai-shek had a meal after the conference. It was the filming site of “General's son”. Those who were the navy in Jinhae would once eat jajangmyeon(black-bean-sauce noodles) in this restaurant.
It would be funny to look around the old buildings in Jinhae Goonhang village. You'd better remind of my story. I strongly recommend it.
