Silsangsa temple is located in Sannae-myeon in Namwon. There were “Gusan Sunmoon”, the nine monks who led the world of thought in the late Silla period. Silsangsa temple was established at first. There are Yaksuam Hermitage and Baekjangam Hermitage nearby. The temple has one national treasure and 11 treasures. It has the greatest number of treasures as a temple in Korea. Okay, here we go!

Interestingly, Silsangsa temple is located in the flatland next to a brook. Few temples are located near the riverside in Korea. Silleuksa temple of Yeoju is the only temple that has been kept for a thousand year. There are Mubongsa temple of Miryang, Goransa Temple of Buyeo and Yeongeunsa Temple of Gongju. But all of them were burnt out during the war. Anyways, I am going to go inside the temple after passing by Haetalgyo bridge. This bridge would be a kind of Iljumun Gate.

There are three stone jangseungs(Korean traditional totem pole at the village entrance) at the ends of Haetalgyo bridge. Two jangseungs faced each other in the past, but one of them was swept away in the flood. They are 3 meters of huge stone jangseungs. Demons would run away when finding them.

I have been to many temples around the country. Most old temples were burnt during the war. Silsangsa Temple had been burnt during Jeongyujaeran, and was restored 100 years after. However, it was burnt again in the late Joseon dynasty period due to the arson. Now only 10 buildings have been left. I am so sorry for that. I am going to look around the precincts.

I found “the place of devotions for a thousand days” that cherishes the victims of Sewol ferry, at first. Yellow flags were standing as much as the number of the victims. I was so sad. I had nothing to say.

Two Three-story Stone Pagodas standing in the yard of the temple, and there are stone lantern and Boghwangjeon on the backside. You might see these styles. They are typical twin pagodas. The temple is now under reconstruction, so it would be more elegant in the future.

East pagoda and west pagoda in front of Boghwangjeon look almost the same. They were established in the period of united Silla when Silsangsa temple was firstly built. They are so beautiful. Few pagodas have upper part in Korea. That is amazing. They are No.37 treasure.

Spring has come to Silsangsa temple. The scent of Japanese apricot flower is so strong. The temple is looking Cheonwangbong Peak of Jirisan Mountain, and surrounded with a lot of peaks. So the atmosphere is a little bit special. Usually, I have to climb an uphill road or stairs when passing by Iljumun gate, the Four Devas gate, Haetalmun gate and Burimun gate. But I am sorry that I don't have to do that.

This pagoda looks extraordinary, too. The stone lantern was made in the period of united Silla along with the pagoda. Interestingly, there is stone stairs in front of the stone lantern. I have never seen the stone lantern like this so far. A monk said the stairs were used when people turned on the light on the stone lantern. It is the only stone lantern with stairs in Korea. Wow! It is awesome! It is No. 35 treasure.

Bogwangjeon hall is a small building on the huge stylobate. It is so small with three rooms. Unlike other royal palaces, dancheong has not been colored. So it is pleasantly simple.

There is Yaksajeon hall on the right side of Bogwangjeon hall. It is with the architecture style in the middle of the Joseon dynasty period that we have usually seen. I think it has undergone reconstruction. The part of decayed tree has been changed, but flower latticed door still remains. It is so beautiful.

There is Iron Buddha in Yaksajeon hall. It was originally located in the field. A legend says it sweats when the country has a good news. Iron Buddha is the most popular in the temple. Yakssa yeoraebu cures injury and eases people's pain. You should bow for three times if you have those problems. It is No. 41 treasure.

I am going to go to the left side of Bogwangjeon hall. There is the hall of Paradise along with a gravestone and a pagoda. All of them are treasures. This is “Sucheolwhasangtapgwhatapbi” built in the period of united Silla. The life story of the monk Sucheol is written on it. But it is hard to recognize the words. They are No.33 and No,34 treasures, respectavely.

The monk Hongcheok firstly built Silsangsa Temple. Like I said, monk Sucheol was the disciple of him. The life story of the monk Hongcheok is written on “Jeunggak daesatap and tapbi”. “Jeunggak” is the name that was given by the King. The pagoda is so beautiful. Unfortunately, however, turtle sculpture only has the head of the gravestone. The body has been disappear. They are No. 38 and No. 39 treasures, respectavely.

Now, it is the time to see the national treasure. It is cherised in the small temple named “Baekjangam Hermitage”. Okay, here we go!

NIKON D750 | f/10.0 | iso 200 | 2016:03:08 16:09:33 | Flash did not fire, compulsory flash mode | 32mm

You can see Baekjangam Hermitage in the middle of Sucheong mountain after driving for 5 kilometers from Silsangsa temple. The mountain trail is quite high but curved and diverse. So you would not be bored. Baekjangam Hermitage is a small temple with Daeungjeon hall, Chilseonggak(a Taoist shrine consecrated to the Big Dipper), Sansingak and Yosachae. Old temple site has remained in front of Daeungjeon hall. It might have been the huge temple in the past. There is Sucheong mountain on the backside, and the temple is surrounded with bamboos. It looks so cozy.

NIKON D750 | f/8.0 | iso 100 | 2016:03:08 16:06:25 | Flash did not fire, compulsory flash mode | 24mm

Wow! Three-story stone pagoda and stone lantern are standing in front of Daeungjeon hall. I think they were established in the period of united Silla. Stone pagoda has equal layers, and various figures are carved in the roof-stones. It is so extraordinary. Even though the stone pagoda is smaller than that in front of Bogwangjeon hall, it is so elegant. Three-story stone pagoda and stone lantern are No. 10 and No. 40 national treasures, respectavely.

NIKON D750 | f/8.0 | iso 200 | 2016:03:08 16:07:44 | Flash did not fire, compulsory flash mode | 24mm

There are more treasures in Silsangsa temple. But I couln't take a picture of them because they are inside the building. Why don't you find them during the trip to Namwon? The temple has the most largest national treasures and treasures in Korea. I strongly recommend it.
