Daegwallyeong Sheep Ranch 양때목장
People get easily confused but there are two ranches in Daegwallyeong, Sheep Ranch and Samyang Ranch. The difference is that the fee for Sheep Ranch is 4,000 won and Samyang Ranch is 8,000 won. Plus, they could chase sheep in Sheep Ranch and you see a herd of cattle eating grass and Wind Power Installation in Samyang Ranch.
I decided to go for Sheep Ranch because I prefer lambs to cattle and 4,000 won over 8,000 for fee. If you pay the fee, you will get a handful of haystack.
Now I understand why the employee who feeds the lambs kept saying we should use our palms to feed the lambs. If we used fingers, they might've sucked into their mouths. Lambs started to run to us and eat dry grass like they were starving.
Before I went to the top, I took a picture of a harmonious family on a swing. I thought it was a really good place for kids because they could observe the lambs, feed them and play on the swings.
It only takes 10 minutes to get to the top of the ranch. But on that day, there was fog all over the ranch. The weather made it look more mysterious but I could not watch a flock of sheep from a distance because of the weather.
Shall we go see lambs running around?
They put the lambs out to pasture in different places. Don't these lambs quietly eating grass remind you of the Alps? What would it be like if you listen to 'when lambs eating grass peacefully' of Bach here? I would like to try next time.
Kids were feeding the lambs that were as young as them. I believe meek lambs are good animals for kids.
Barbecue at pension
As I think it's not worth to pack every dish only for two people on a trip, we decided to use the room service provided here at the pension. We made a reservation of best quality sirloin from Daegwallyeong for 2 people with meals included for 110,000 won.
They served frank sausages, onions, mushrooms and dishes including sirloin. The owner said rice and deonjangjjigae would be served later. Even if it's best quality meat, it tastes depending on how you grill it. Charcoal in the grill was the best quality which made it much more delicious.
The highest quality sirloin properly seasoned that the fat looks like snow or frost. Yes, you are right!
The owner seems like he doesn't to mind offering these sausages for free. A frank was high quality with high portion of meat and did not smell of fat.
As wine for best quality sirloin, we chose the rare one from 'Margaux' region, France. I can tell you this is the softest French wine that I've ever tasted. Plus, we took Ridel wine glasses that we usually carry during the trip as always.
In old times, this used to be Cary Tube and Harbeth Speakers but they are transformed into vintage audio system in a cafe. The speakers of AR's tuner all-in-one amplifier output very different sound than the previous modern sound. When I listen to Gim Gwang-seok's songs, in other words, when I listen to the vocal sound with least sound of instrument it makes the best and unique sound, and it makes me “WOW" because of its warm and friendly sound. Of course, Maria Callas was good and the vocal did a good job in general.
The owner of Salvatore pension made the Tarrazu that makes “duruk duruk" noise on the spot and it was like a drug that adds the attraction of classical music.
As a big fan of Maria Callas, one side of the wall was full of her albums~ Her opera aria full of sorrow sounds really addictive, I must say.
Looking at the pictures hung up on the other side of the wall convinced me that the people living in Daegwallyeong must take the best pictures of Daegwallyeong. The blue sky of Samyang Ranch of Daegwallyeong could not be more clear, white clouds were floating all by themselves like they're painted, and the cows were eating grass relaxed. There's no reason to be disappointed or upset just because you couldn't take this kind of photo when you only visit here once or twice in a year.
In one corner, we found a book shelf with very nice books that might attract people who have hunger for good books during vacation. I randomly chose a few, 'Wild flower of Korea(한국의 야생화)', an essay written by someone about Monk Beopjeong, the writer of 'Nonpossession by Beopjeong', and a few books written by the poet Jang Seok-ju that match my taste.

We've arrived at woodland path which is a treasure that is only known to residents, thanks to the pension owner, Salvatore. While Sheep Ranch is open since 9 a.m. this place has no entrance fee or guard so you are allowed to take a walk very early in the morning and I found it very attractive that I could enjoy the calm walk where there's nobody else but us. The distance is about 4km so you could enjoy a slow walk for 1.5 hours.
Whenever I crossed the boundaries between Gyeonggi-do and Gangwon-do, I could never miss the spirit of trees standing tall in Gangwon-do. This place also makes me feel dignity of trees standing so tall.
As I searched about this, you could say this is one of Filipendula glasberrima Nakai. Light pink color puts a smile on visitor's face.
Red wild berries are seducing intruders in the mountain.
I must say, I've never seen golden-wave is in such full bloom. This yellow golden-wave that looks like someone pushed it from behind and that it is running towards me was very impressive.
During the walk, white trunks block us just like that. White surface of tree that has a strong contrast effect that it's like seeing white and black in the colorful world, yes that is birch(Jajakdamu). Doesn't their name sound crunchy? The tree was named for the sound it makes when it burns.
There are tree rings like waves at low tide.
It has black spots like rock blocks on a white beach. It shows the harmony of white beauty with dark pattern just like there's no life without agony.
According to the board, this is a Norway spruce. I feel dizzy to think that the only trees I can notice are pine tree and zelkova tree.
After the walk along woodland path early in the morning (6:30 a.m.) we went to the cafe in the pension. The breakfast was included in the room service so we had a comfortable morning.
We enjoyed it because it's bothersome to prepare breakfast during the vacation or to look for an open restaurant in the morning. Fried eggs, fried bread, soup, orange juice and fresh coffee was more than enough for us.
We went to birch forest close to the Sheep Ranch before we headed to Seoul. It reminded us of how we felt from the birch during the morning walk. Slightly bended but straight body that seems like its agony and white face that is likely to symbolize innocent souls. I feel like I would like to spend quite a long time with birch on my next trip. We turned our backs to Seoul capturing the view of birch that healed us just by looking at them.
Goodbye, Daegwallyeong. So this is it, my two day trip to Daegwallyeong where I could feel the atmosphere of the Alps in Korea and clean area located on the 800-meter hill that does not require any air conditioners.
