Gwangju Museum of Art

We ran into the art museum between 「Gwangju Folk Museum」 and 「Gwangju Museum of Art」 because not only we wanted to take shelter from rain but also this museum is quite famous.

Secondly, we were worried we wouldn't watch the performance in the folk museum. It was too bad that we should have chosen only one place.

Unlike outside the building that is wet with rain, it has a presence of museum. It's full of stylish bright lighting.

The museum seems more modern and well-arranged from the entrance because there are simply 3 or 4 pieces in a large lobby.

In front of the ticket office, there is an over 2m-long white ceramic with beamed pretty butterfly. This space is popular as a photo zone among children.

When we visited the museum, there was an exhibition, 'Sweet dew since 1980' to celebrate 20th anniversary of Gwangju Biennale. Its theme was related to the spirit of resistance like the one of 5.18 fighting against injustice, violence, and inequality.

We paid only 500 won at the ticket office and in the corner, there are paintings on the white wall.

We could not find detail meanings of each works because we were laypeople of paintings, but we made a guess that a woman wearing black skirt and white Korean traditional jacket has something to do with the Japanese army's comfort women.

49 artists from 17 countries participated in this exhibition in various ways with their painting and performance works.

It looked like an image of Chinese people around the Liberation Period. Did I make a best guess? This large exhibit combined with pictures and embossed wooden work is made by a Chinese artist.

It seems to express an image of Japanese Occupation Era. Its contents are important but it reminds me art classes in my youth when I enjoyed putting glue on a drawing paper and putting sand on it.

The museum looks stylish and cool due to the high ceiling and wide hall. There are few visitors due to heavy rain even though it's on the weekend. These makes me feel true atmosphere of the museum.

It's very nice to see many people who are familiar in this piece of art painted with only red color.

'Clatter clatter clatter~ Whiz'. Typing sound fills the quiet art gallery. A miniature of man gleaming a neon light is on display. He is sitting with his head down in front of a shabby wooden desk in the corner. The work expresses a scene that a man has been investigated by the police. If you look carefully, you could find he is Jesus.

There is a work that shows light effects using thin threads over a slope way to the second floor(Exactly first floor). It's very inspiring that it's possible to make this wonderful effects with simple things like the light and thread.

Is it a strength and a weakness of the museum? It has simple structures but it's somewhat difficult to return to the washroom or entrance.

In addition, the museum is not familiar place for us like the common(?). Fortunately, there are many curators here and there in the museum and they help to resolve inconveniences right away.

I don't know if we didn't find it, but if there was a pamphlet of artwork, it would have been better to understand the purpose of work.

If the art museum just exhibits art works, children will be bored. Half of the first floor is formed as an art space for children.

Like this, Gwangju Museum of Art has various exhibitions with experience space for children and video works, as well as paintings and sculptures. It's particularly the great place to enjoy cultural advantages with only 500 won(Adult). The more we are satisfied with 'Gwangju Museum of Art', the more we feel bad that we didn't look around 'Gwangju Folk Museum'.

Dadam Gang Deok-sun Korean Tea & Rice cake Cafe Art shop

Gwangju Museum of Art is a good dating course but 「Dadam Gang Deok-sun Korean Tea & Rice cake Cafe Art shop」 located on the first floor of the museum is also a great specialty.

You can go into 'Dadam' called rice cake cafe directly through the entrance on one side of the lobby. You don't have to go out of the building.

Interior is decorated with trees, yellow lamps made of Hanji(Traditional Korean paper handmade from mulberry trees), and decorations from the ceiling. They produce warm and comfortable atmosphere in the cafe.

As 'Dasarop' where we went yesterday night, this is a traditional tea place. On the menu, there are names of tea that are unfamiliar to the young. It has only a few coffee.

The cafe is full of people regardless of age. It's hard to find empty seats. It might be the must-visit course for people who visit the art museum.

The wall is filled with colorful small props and various handmade articles. Customers also take pictures of them along the wall while drinking their tea.

Besides, these goods are on sale. Each one has price tags. We had to be satisfied to watch it because it was not that cheap.

While gazing around the cafe, 'Shaved Ice with Green Tea' is served. Surprisingly unlike other places, employees of this cafe bring us what we ordered directly instead giving alarm bells.

Shaved ice with green tea has lots of green tea ice cream, red beans, and rice cakes. It's dispensed in the golden brass ware that makes the shaved ice special.

Small vase that makes me dream the spare time and classical grace and dignity. Wouldn't it be possible to say Deom(Giving an extra) culture is one of traditional cultures? Two pieces of skewered rice cake are an extra coming with the beverage.

'Roast Wormwood and Injeolmi' came out after a while. Much savory bean powder, red bean, dried jujubes, and honey are sprinkled on the yellowish roasted worm wood and Injeolmi. Basically much bean powder is sprinkled between wormwood Injeolmi and a dish because it's too sticky on the dish. You can enjoy much savory flavor of bean powder.

* Injeolmi : Korean traditional rice cake made from the glutinous rice and coated with bean flour

When you cut chewy Injeolmi with delicate wormwood scent off with wooden knife and fork and put a piece of Injeolmi into your mouth, you can enjoy sweetness of strong honey in your mouth. Crunchable dried jujubes and tree nuts make me happy.

According to an opinion of Cholidingi who tried a bit, it tastes high-grade honey. It's not quite believable opinion, but its flavor and harmony of ingredients is wonderful. It's a recommendable menu. Besides, we can be refreshed with cool shaved ice with green tea. It's like we are in heaven.

We have enjoyed the time like in heaven and look over the window. 'Shut…' heavy rain is still falling. It's already 6pm. We don't have time anymore so Dadam should be the last destination of the trip. It's too bad that we didn't have time to visit Gwangju Folk Museum, but inevitably, we have to run through heavy rain again toward the express bus terminal.
