Sokcho Lighthouse Observatory

If Sokcho is famous for its scenaries, the best scenaries in Sokcho would be the view of 「Sokcho Lighthouse Observatory」. This is why lighthouse observatory is the best among 8 scenic places in Sokcho.

Plus, it's not located in isolated town far away from downtown and it's rather close to Dongmyeong Port, a port located at eastern end of Sokcho downtown, which is easily accessible.

But in order to do its role as lighthouse lighting up the waterways, it should be on a high hill. Just like forests should climb up steep stairs in order to watch that lighthouse.

If you climbed up the steel stairs and step on small cliff where the lighthouse is, you'll see flatland on the top that you could build a small stage unlike steep cliff you saw from downstairs.

As I looked back, I noticed this is the best place to have a glance at Sokcho downtown right away. Anyone would see this is where the lighthouse is supposed to be. Climbing up the stairs to get this view would be the least we could do I suppose.

The lighthouse on the steep cliff. You could indeed climb up to the observatory where you can get broader view like anywhere else unless there's a reason not to due to bad weather. However, when the sun sets, it has work to do, I mean lighting the waterway, so it's open only for specific time during the day.

The first floor of lighthouse offers info about the sea in Sokcho. It also tells about Cheongchoho Lake that is visible from the observatory as well as the stories of blue dragon and yellow dragon from Yeongrangho.

We follow the round walls that showed us fast motions of beautiful ocean scenaries in Sokcho. The panorama movies, which were too big to see them at a glance with background music, guided us to the sea. This is almost like an IMAX theater.

You could climb up the spiral stairs from the first floor. Second story has small models displayed that explain the history of lighthouse and what it does.

Thanks to Sokcho Port's size, which is big enough to have International Passenger Terminal, there were additional lighthouses nearby Jodo and neighboring breakwaters not just Sokcho lighthouse. So when we finished looking around the half of the exhibition, we found other stairs to the higher place.

We went up until the observatory with no glass appears. The lighthouse lighting is higher but we are not allowd to go higher than here.

To the far south, an anormous cruise ship was waiting for passengers docked at Sokcho International Passenger Terminal and we could see Abai Village and Cheongchoho Lake we visited that day. I could also get a clear view of the ridge of Mt. Seorak where the sky meets ocean.

When I turned my head a little to the southeast, there was Jodo far away, Dongmyeong Port where the people are moving in hurry in front of winding breakwaters on the beach, and Yeonggeumjeong on the high and pointed rock.

I was looking at the open sea to the east then saw right under me, and there were big and white rocks on the beach than any other beaches in Sokcho. This place where the flat rocks are spread out is one part of Yeonggeumjeong. You'll get the best view of this from lighthouse observatory.

First scenery in Sokcho that is known to make Geomungo sound when the waves hit the rocks is Yeonggeumjeong. This was introduced in the interactive movies earlier. I should get closer to Yeonggeumjeong.

We went back to the first floor and found a camera to leave notes. There were few people so we took a picture~ But as I suspected, I couldn't get it to my email even if I filled in. Phew…!!

I can't believe I was fooled by camera for visitors at this beautiful lighthouse…We trudged along on foot towards the beach again. Whenever we got one step closer, the sound of waves was louder and the rock floating on the sea got bigger.

And as we got closer to white rock that seemingly floats on blue water, we could see so many people on it. So now what I wanna know is… how did they get in there?????
