Pocheon HanwooMaeul

Pocheon, especially Idong-myeon in Pocheon is so well known for Idong Galbi, almost like a proper name. It became famous when this area offered 10 ribs of beef for one person at the restaurant targeting soldiers but it is not so cheap these days and it’s known that the beef is imported.

Although we came to Idong-myeon, the origin of Idong Galbi, we had to choose another menu other than Idong Galbi for those reasons. What we ordered is Pocheon Hanwoo. So we headed to a quite famous restaurant in Pocheon called Pocheon HanwooMaeul.

Pocheon HanwooMaeul has two buildings on the final bus stop in Dopyeng-ri that stand on each side of the road. We bought the meat at a butcher’s shop that is octagonal shape, and headed to the opposite side of the road to eat it.

We headed to the butcher’s shop and stood for a while comparing parts and colors of beef that were waiting in the refrigerator for people. Sirlion? or stiploin?

After a long discussion what to eat, we bought chuck flap tail with pretty fats and beef thin skirt that the owner suggested us. You could assume it’s 1++ quality by the look of fat. Hehe~~

After we paid for the beef, we crossed the two-lane road with the bag in my hand and got to the restaurant.

I’ve seen so many restaurants belonging to the butcher’s shop but never saw one across the street. And the building or the area was neat so it made me feel relieved.

At the entrance, there were signatures and medals by celebrities, and especially the signature by Mo Tae-beom Olympics Speed Skating Golden Medalist attracted my eyes.

The restaurant was quite big and it wasn’t meal time so we didn’t wait for the table although the people were barging in as soon as we sat down.

If you bring the meat like we do, you’ll have to pay for 3,000 won extra for one person. It’s not so bad considering vegetables, common dishes and charcoals provided to each table.

Even though you didn’t bring meat, you could order simple meals on the menu. I was a bit worried to see the picture of raw meat on the menu since my wife started to eat it a while ago. ‘No way she’s gonna finish this all and order a dish of raw meat…right?’

As soon as we sat down, they didn’t ask anything but brought charcoal fire on the table. Hexagonal charcoal fire that is normally used in regular restaurants is known to be harmful for human bodies but these are real.

And it’s simple but vegetables and common dishes are offered in order. Honestly, common dishes are just for appetite because main dish is beef. So nobody cares about common dishes.

But I must say, they were so much better than I had expected. They were pickled cucumber, perilla leaves and onions that made my mouth fresh and I liked them ‘cause they were crunchy.

Plus you could bring as much as lettuce or onions from the bar near the entrance.

And the main character with vinyl undressed, chuck flap tail. The fat contained in the meat looked like a flower. And it’s quite thick that it would have a strong flavour even after we bake it.

As soon as I put them on the steep plate, it started to make delicious noise. And then the owner started to explain how to bake it well. He was so passionate about the way to bake beef.

So the first piece was properly cooked. Actually I flipped it too many times so the owner did it himself later. Can you see the oil coming out of properly cooked meat?

Properly baked chuck flap tail just melted in my mouth. Next meat went right into my mouth with onions and vegetables. Hooray~~. I barely ate but chuck flap tail disappeared already.

Then we opened the package of beef thin skirt, the owner’s favorite part. It’s a very special part that they only get 1~2kg for one cow.

Beef thin skirt is a bit thinner and longer than chuck flap tail yet smaller so I just had to spread all of them on the plate.

And then along with onions flavoured in sauce…I felt the full flavour of chewy beef. Then we were happy that we made the right choice of eating Pocheon Hanwoo instead of Idong Galbi.

Hahaha…as you can see in the picture, we couldn’t help but order something else. Blaming that “it’s cold~~we’ve got to drink something hot,” we ordered one Hanwoo Gomtang(beef-bone soup).

I don’t know if it’s because we ordered it after we finished flavory Hanwoo but we couldn’t find anything special about the soup. But we wanted something hot so finished one bowl of rice in soup in an instance.

And a bowl of beef tartare bibimbap(Yukhoe-bibimbap) we ordered instead of a dish of raw meat for my wife. Of course a big bowl of beef-bone soup was served with the rice as well.

If you look inside, there’s a handful of scarlet raw meat on vegetables in the big bowl. The raw meat was enough. If it’s too much I wanted to help her but I failed.

We put a bowl of rice into the big bowl of raw meat, put some Gochujang served together and mix it with chopsticks, not a spoon, not to smash the rice. Raw meat in the spicy Bibimbap tasted soooooooo good~~

We knew that we could order mushroom after we finished the meal. We were devastated to know that ‘cause mushroom is a must-eat item when we eat beef.

So after finishing 4 people’s meal including Pocheon Hanwoo, beef tartare bibimbap(Yukhoe-bibimbap) and beef-bone soup(Hanwoo Gomtang), we walked out of the restaurant with a cup of coffee in one hand. If I have to evaluate the restaurant, the quality of meat, price, and employee services were quite good. So I think it would be a viable choice to go to Pocheon HanwooMaeul if you go to Idong-myeon in Pocheon unless you HAVE TO eat Idong Galbi.

Then we faced another obstacle right before we left the restaurant. We saw they were selling skewered beef, meat and vegetables stuck on a stick flavoured in sauce. Each one costs 3,000 won. “Hm…I want that so much…there’s gotta be a hole in our stomach…”
