“Chungcheong Suyeong Castle”, the guardian for the waterway to Hanyang

There is a small stone castle in Boreong-si, Chungcheongnam-do, which protected a waterway to Hanyang in the Joseon Dynasty era in 16th century. There is Ochun port just in front of the castle that overlooks the sea. What a beautiful scenery! Many vessels have come in and out Ochun port since Baekjae Period. It was the important major harbor which connected China and Japan. In addition, it was the strategic location in the Joseon Dynasty as there was Suyeong for the naval forces of Chungcheongnam-do. The name had been changed from “Ochun castle” to “Chungcheong Suyeong castle”.

Some small stone castles are surrounded by a hill of countryside. Because it is hard to find a food court around here, there are many local residents in this restaurant district. The castle is conveniently located to observe the sea, because it was built at upside of hill near the seaside.

The ramparts are small, but they have a strong Korean atmosphere. While Suwon Hwaseong Fortress was evenly built in late Joseon dynasty, Chungcheong Suyeong castle was made of uneven natural stones in the middle Joseon dynasty. You can find that Haemieupseong in Seosan-si, Chungcheongnam-do was also built similarly.

The area of the castle is as much as 13,747㎡, but it remains just three buildings; Jinhyulcheong, Janggyocheong and an arched gate as the picture above. In the past, there were a pavilion, five Ongseong, four doors from all directions, a pond and about forty buildings. There were just 1km of ramparts, so I was afraid that they might be damaged, too.

When entering a rainbow shape of a door, there is Jinhyulcheong which is a small tile-roofed house in the left side of the top. It was the government office that was used to rescue the poor in the Joseon dynasty. Thereafter, Chungcheong Suyeong had been fall out of use in 1896, and it was used as a private house. And the Korean government purchased and has preserved it. Then, who was the lucky owner who lived in this gorgeous house which overlooks Ochun port?

The roles of Suyeong castle were to protect a transport ship carrying rice taxes or indigenous products to Hanyang, and to defend an invasion of Japanese army. It also played a role to monitor the movements of western vessels in modern era. It used to be a quite big castle with 142 warships and 8,414 naval forces.

It is a mere shadow of it's former self, but I could imagine the scale of Suyeong castle when standing near the castle in front of Jinhyulcheong, and watching Ochun port with a number of fishing boats. It was told that left side was all reclaimed land, so it seemed that the port had a huge scale then.

Following the ramparts, I can see Janggyocheong in front of a steeple. As you may see, the ramparts are disconnected by the road crossing the center. Although I cannot stop the development progress, I am sorry that people didn't show the wisdom of harmonizing development and conservation by taking advantage of a small bridge like Suwon Hwaseong Fortress.

There used to be Yeongbojeong, where I am taking pictures. And it is under reconstruction. The scenery of Yeongbojeong was so beautiful that many poets of Joseon dynasty visited the place. Jeong Yak-yong, Lee hang-bok praised Yeongbojeong very highly.

When seeing the disconnected ramparts again, there is Janggyocheong. It is small compared to Sebyeonggwan that is an inn of Navy Headquarters of Three Provinces, and Jinnam Kwan that is a hotel of Jwasuyoung Jeolla. But surrounded by terraced walls, it looks elegant.

I can see a local resident who had a lunch and is taking a nap here, haha. Anyways, the inn was used for enshrining a plate which symbolizes the King, and accommodating government officials or commissions of the central government.

Janggyocheong had been originally located in the elementary school near the village, but it moved to the top of a hill. It was partially repaired, so the eaves are mixed with old and new lumber. Even though dancheong is not splendid, Korean architecture is always beautiful.

Now the inside of Chungcheong Suyeong castle is full of grass, because only some part of it is restored. It has been currently renovated again. I expect that it takes back its original brilliant figure, and many tourists visit the place along with Ochun port.
