Mungyeong Gaeun filming site where Goguryeo and Silla Dynasty eras are recreated 가은오픈세트장

There are many filming site used for TV dramas and films in Mungyeong. The drama filming site located between Mungyeongsaejae Gateway No.1 and Gateway No.2 is filled with architectures from Silla era, while Gaeun filming site that I'm about to show you has castles and architectures from Goguryeo.

Scenes from Joseon Dynasty era are filmed here as well as other historical dramas other than Joseon. They include 'Deep-rooted Tree', 'Queen Seondeok', 'Gyebaek', 'Great King, Gwang Gae To', and recent one 'Jeong DoJeon'.
There are three filming sites in Gaeun filming site, and filming site No.1 consists of Pyeongyang Castle, Goguryeo palace, Goguryeo village and Silla village.

Filming site No.2 consists of Ansi-fortress and village within the fortress and filming site No.3 has Yodong-fortress and village within the castle. Today, I'll be visiting the filming site No.1.

I could walk to the filming site but it is located really high so it would good for your mental health to take a monorail.

The fees for monorail car are as above. Be cautious about 'museum/filming site' fees though. The service is available with 1,000 won but if you walk to the filming site without taking the monorail, 'museum/filming site' fees are 2,000 won as follows.

Plus, they don't sell museum fee and filming site fee separately that you would use both service with one ticket. Basically, for entrance fee for one adult, you have to pay 6,000 won including monorail, or 2,000 won excluding monorail service.

We didn't have to wait for monorail too long since it comes every 5 to 10 minutes. Here comes the one that I will take!

If you decided to walk up the mountain, you will have to climb up to the top of the mountain so I think it would be good for mental health or knees if you just use monorail.

You could jump to the top of the mountain by monorail. It is not that far so it only takes 3 minutes to get to the destination.

As we entered the entrance of filming site, there is a place where they used to twist someone's legs and hitting them on bottoms to torture them.

Every visitor tried it lying there and pretending to be beaten on their bottoms.

This part with a big garden is Goguryeo palace filming site.

It is surrounded by the house of Yeon Tae Jo, houses of other yoksals and blacksmith's workshop.

The roofs of the buildings look a little bit different from the ones in Joseon. It's novel. This must be where yangbans in village used to live together.

I can notice the structures are higher probably because of steps than the ones from Joseon, and handrails surrounding the house seems different.

This place was built to recreate Pyeongyang Castle of Goguryeo. It looks completely different from the castle walls in Joseon Dynasty era. This is the view from the inside of the castle.

This is outside the castle. I was curious if it's really made with bricks so I touched them and they were dirt with wooden board under it, not bricks. So it is dangerous to go up the castle.

When you look down from Pyeongyang Castle, you can see filming site No.2 and filming site No.3. If I walk down, it would take 20 minutes since it is quite far. However, I would have to come up back to filming site No.1 in order to take monorail so I didn't think I could make it in time.

I still have rail bike to show you and visit the coal museum today. If you need to go there anyway, keep in mind that you should come up by monorail and get there on foot. It is quite far since you need to walk down along the hillside from filming site No.1.

This is Ansi-fortress, filming site No.2. The first battle scene of the drama 'Yeongaesomun' was filmed in Ansi-fortress.

You could see tilt-roofed house in front of the castle gate, and a thatched-roof house behind it.

This is the filming site No.3 called Yodong Castle(Yodongseong)....but...there's a staff car!!! The staff looked busy with installing something and I see they were shooting that day.

I regret not going there. However, I would have to pass since I want to show you as many places in Mungyeong as I can in 2 days.

We felt sorry that we couldn't stay longer but we will take a look around Goguryeo village again.

The strange thing is that it's hard to find 'do not sit' or 'do not step on' sign in Gaeun filming site. They must've allowed people to sit on toenmaru(narrow wooden porch running along the outside of a room) to touch things or take pictures.

Don't you think it would look adorable to see people sitting next to each other in line on that floor and take a picture?

That is a grass-roofed house that I've seen somewhere in a drama. Considering that it has an iron pot in the yard, it would turn into an inn if we bring a table next to it.

This is a royal palace that looks quite unique. As it has 3-section structures on the front side of gambrel roof, it reminds me of Geungnakjeon(the hall of Paradise) of Bongseongsa Temple in Andong, the temple from Goryeo dynasty and designated as a national treasure No.15.

Do you remember the place that I introduced as Goguryeo palace before? This is the same building but the backside is decorated as Silla palace.

They could do that for films or dramas. In Suwon KBS drama filming site, I saw some building that looks like a theater on the front side and bank on the back, or half of the gate looks like a door from the Japanese colonial era and the other half is used for Korean modern period. :)

In front of Silla palace, they reappeared the village inside the castle. I wonder where I could see this place in the drama, Queen Seondeok.

Somewhere around here, there must be houses of Kim Yu-shin and Kim Chun-chu but even the signs or tour pamphlet didn't tell me where they are. I'll just enjoy the view.

Korean old architectures look so friendly. The tilted roof was put onto the walls made of stones and dirt, and even on the small side doors, roof mixed with rafters that looks like Iljumun gate of some temple was added.

After taking around the filming site, we went back down by monorail. Next destination would be the Coal Museum which is located next to monorail exit gate.

I introduced you two drama filming sites in Mungyeong. First one is Mungyeongsaejae Filming Site that shows the look of Joseon Dynasty era recreated in Mungyeongsaejae and the second one is Gaeun filming site that recreates the eras of Silla and Goguryeo.

Both places have its unique characteristics and I felt I had seen some of them somewhere in the movies or dramas.

For its big size, I assure you that there are many things to see in Mungyeongsaejae Filming Site but when you come up by monorail, you could also have fun looking at architectures from Silla and Goguryeo eras. I suggest you to go both places.
