3. Introduction to Bulgogi

Bulgogi is already well-known Korean food in foreign countries. It is a Korean traditional food with a long, probably thousands years of history since Koguryo era (B.C. 37 – A.D. 668).

It has been called by different names in different times but it’s called by ‘Bulgogi’ as people started to barbecue the meat marinated with Japanese-styled soy sauce from the 1950s.

It’s one of the most popular Korean foods that Korean people enjoy as a regular meal not just on some special occasions.

On sliced meats for soft texture, the first taste would be salty soy sauce and sweet sugars followed by gentle scents and flavors of garlics and gingers that help you to get rid of the smell of meat.

There’s a difference between soy sauce and salt. Soy sauce is one of Korean traditional sauces made from soybeans fermented for a long time, which is why it is not only salty but also flavory. Bulgogi is marinated with different ingredients and soy sauce that increases your appetite.

With basic soy sauce seasoning, there are different kinds of Bulgogi depending on the way it is cooked or what ingredients are used. Since it is one of most popular Korean foods among foreigners, I suggest that you should try different kinds of Bulgogi.

4. Kinds of Bulgogi

You could choose pork or beef Bulgogi with the same soy sauce seasoning. Beef is mostly used.

It’s enjoyed in every season in every region so there are different kinds of Bulgogi in each region. The most common ones are called Seoul Bulgogi, Eonyang Bulgogi, Gwangyang Bulgogi and Sariwon Bulgogi, and the most popular ones are Seoul Bulgogi and Gwangyang Bulgogi.

The difference between two kinds would be how you cook it.

Seoul Bulgogi allows you to enjoy the original flavor of Bulgogi as it is fried on a pan with vegetables and glass noodles. It’s soaked in sauce so that you could also add rice as a meal. That’s why Koreans prefer this type of Bulgogi.

Gwangyang Bulgogi is meat barbecued with charcoal grill. You could smell the scent of charcoal from meat but it does not have liquid so it is nice dish for eating with alcoholic drinks.

5. How to enjoy Bulgogi even more

Bulgogi is usually served with various vegetables. You might as well enjoy meat wrapped with lettuce or perilla leaves. You will be able to enjoy refreshing crunch of lettuce. You could also fully enjoy Korean Bulgogi if you put sliced garlics or spicy chili pepper with meat in the lettuce.
