Mungyeongsaejae Filming Site that lead the Korean wave 문경새재 오픈세트장
If you walk a little from Mungyeongsaejae Gateway No.1 to Gateway No.2, there is a filming site for shooting drama with villages and palace from Joseon Dynasty era recreated.
Most of the historical dramas based on Joseon Dynasty era aired in Korea are filmed here including 'Moon Embracing the Sun', 'Deep-rooted Tree', 'Great King, Gwang Gae To', 'Joen Woochi: The Taoist Wizard', 'Jang Ok Jeong' and others that lead Korean wave.
Recent drama 'My Love From the Star' with Jeon Ji-hyun and Kim Soo-hyun in it, Joseon Dynasty era background was filmed here as well.
This is the front gate entrance to the filming site. You can enter anywhere you like since they sell the tickets at the front and back gates.

As I entered it, I am surprised that I was wondering if it's actually Gyeongbokgung Palace.
This is Gangnyeongjeon(康寧殿) where the King used to spend daily life.
On the roof of Gangnyeongjeon, there is no ridge of a roof connecting two roofs because two dragons cannot stay in one building.
It is well built which looks similar with the one next to Gangnyeongjeon, Gyeongbokgung Palace. It looks like that an old person is about to come out of that small door.
This is Gyotaejeon(交泰殿) where the queen used to live. You can't see the ridges of a roof here as well, just like Gangnyeongjeon. This means the king can stay in this bedchamber. This place always appears in historical dramas where the queen appears.
This is called Geunjeongmun(勤政門). There was only Mun(門; gate), with no Geunjeongjeon.
Geunjeongjeon is where national ceremonies were held and foreign envoys were greeted. It looks exactly the same as the real one. It is marvelous.
You can see this view when you get out of Gwanghwamun Gate, and this is where current Gwanghwamun Square is. I believe it used to look like this?
The gate looks friendly over the walls with roof tiles on the top and autumn leaves hanging on the walls were beautiful.
This alley is the recreation of a yangban village where yangbans used to live in front of Gyeongbokgung Palace.
The gate of a noble family was impressively standing high and the pond in the yard looks marvelous. This is not real heritage, but made for drama filming.
But the size is as big as real Gyeongbokgung Palace. It was quite large. I can see Donggung(the Palace of Crown Prince) where the Crown Princes and Crown Princess used to live far at the foot of the mountain.
This place looks reminds me of the scenes where an assassin is chasing after disguising as a yangban to kill him.
Can you imagine a warrior with a sword and gat(Korean traditional hat made of bamboo and horsehair) on his head popping up from somewhere?
Mungyeong Filming Site which is made with natural environment in Mungyeong looks so real and detailed to say it is imitated.
I feel like a white-dressed farmer is about to get out of the thatched-roof house,
and a woman is about to come out with a water jar to get water from old thatched-roof house.
This site was built for drama but there is no high apartment or building around it so it looks exactly like the one from Joseon Dynasty era.
Film makers or drama manufacturers must be using this place partly because there's no need for expensive CG effect which would cost more than appearance fees paid to actors/actresses.
Over the Gwanghwamun Square, I can see Gwanghwamun far away. I wonder what it was like in Joseon Dynasty era. I'm really curious.
I decided to use electronic motor cars from the filming site through Gateway No.1 to the parking lot. I felt a little tired after walking almost 9km including the steep uphill to Yeogung Falls.
Now it's time to take a look around Museum of Old Roads located in the parking lot at the entrance then have lunch.
In order to take electronic motor cars, you should buy a ticket at the entrance of filming site. It costs 1,000 for one adult.
Wow, it's really really comfortable. It's only 1km distance but electronic motor car is quite fun to try. It's not expensive so I recommend you to try once. Middle aged men and women all became kids and laughed.
