Dongpirang Mural Village
It’s a village on the uphill behind the Jungang market, which is a representative fishery market of Tongyeong. The name ‘Dongpirang’ means ‘East wind’. When you follow the curved passage uphill and arrive at Dongpirang Mural Village where the harbour comes into sight, the colorful murals catches attraction.
This is the place where Dongporu had been of Tongjaeyeong, which is set up by general Yi Sun-shin in the Joseon era. Tongyeong City had planned to tear down the old village and reconstructed Dongporu and make a park nearby it. To this, in October of 2007, a civic group called ‘Blue Tongyeong 21’ argued for the rights and values of public art and opened a ‘Contest of coloring Dongpirang-National Mural Contest’. And 18 teams consisted of the university students or independents from all over the country painted on the old walls of the village.
As the news of the newly decorated Dongpirang village had spread, people started to visit and the public saying to protect the village grew bigger. At the end, Tongyeong City decided to only destroy the 3 houses on the top of the village for the reconstruction of Dongporu. The village that used to be the subject of demolition had become a attraction of Tongyeong. –Dusan Encyclopedia

In Seoul, there is only the famous Ehwa village which is famous for mural, and there are more tourist sites that are getting famous with the similar concept. But comparing to Ewha-dong in Seoul, I think this place is much better, considering of the artistic value and diversity.

The Universe Kid Atom is the legendary character which I used to watch on TV when I was a elementary 1~2 grader student. It’s nice to see this guy here. The meet of legendary Atom and Pororo gives us the pleasure, skipping the time.

As I reached the top of the village, I grew thirsty and breathless. At the spot, we found a snackbar café at the top, and ordered a Ppaettegi porridge and a cup of coffee.

A 4,000 won Ppaettegi porridge. As the origin of Ppaettegi porridge, made of dried sweet potatoes and red beans, millet, kidney beans. This was used to be the main food ate for lunch in the wintertime in
Tongyeong. It should be boiled for 2 and a half hours, needed much of one’s sincere. The most important thing is the sweet potatoes’ taste. The proper taste of Ppaettegi porridge is hard to come out, unless it’s made of Tongyeong Yokji island sweet potatoes.
It gives me the feeling of well-being health food, but can’t say it’s that tasty. I gave the meaning of resting and eating the food of people of Tongyeong.

This is the place where Dongporu used to be, which was built by General Yi Sun-Shin. It’s the top of Dongpirang village. I can see the ocean water moving at the direction of Jungang market in Dongho-dong.
