Heungjeong Valley Course among 1st course of 'Hyoseok Literature 100Ri Road'

The background of Yi Hyo-seok's short novel is Bongpyeong-myeon, Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon-do. The old road where Heosaengwon and Dong-i used to come and go was recently born again after being transformed into 'Hyoseok Literature 100Ri Road'. This course has total 5 sections and stretches over 53.5 km. You can enjoy natural landscapes, such as the river, field, forest, etc. walking along this old road with each theme. Today, let's walk on the first course 'Literature Road'.

As for the course, the first 7.8 km course is 'Literature Road' and takes about 2 hours from the birthplace of Yi Hyo-seok to the neck of rapids in Jangpyeong-ri. The second 13.3 km course is 'The road to the Daehwa Marketplace' and takes about 3 hours from the neck of rapids to the marketplace. The third 10.4 km course is 'The road to the protection forest along the river' and takes 2 and half hours from the Daehwa Marketplace to Bangnim Samgeori(Three-way intersection). The last fifth course is divided into two parts; 5-1 and 5-2. Each part has 7.5 km of 2-hour and 4.3 km of 1-hour walking paths.

I took the first course Literature Road by walking on a shady path along the Heungjeong Valley and it was fun to take photos and put the feet into water sitting on a broad and flat rock beside the river.

It was told that Pyeongchang-gun recently held a ritual for rain because of severe drought, but Heungjeong Valley still has quite a lot of water. If there was more rain, wouldn't much clear water run?

The river water keep gathering around a large rock, being divided, and flowing. The place like puddle had slow velocity of running fluid and it looked like a pool made by the nature. It seemed it had deep depth of water. I really want to float a tube and enjoy it in summer.

When you see that sign with hat and stick, you are on the Hyo-seok Literature 100Ri Road. Let's walk along the forest walkway even if I can not finish the whole course as I came here by my car.

The road that is hard to walk through was conveniently arranged with wooden deck, but most roads are dirt roads so you can fully enjoy the nature. There were a few people who was riding bicycles. This course had quite easy way so you could look around by bicycle.

I felt refreshed to see the river on the left and walk on the small winding paths made on the side of the river. It was hot day but I could pleasantly walked on the roads due to cool breeze in the forest and shade over the whole roads. I want to finish the whole course by bicycle next time.

There are quite unique shaped rocks at the Heungjeong Valley. These rocks are called as 'Palseokjeong(八石亭)' and many people misunderstand that here is Jeongja(亭子, Pavilion) because of its name. It doesn't indicate pavilion, but 8 rocks. It's impressive to see a towering pine tree above the rock in the clear stream.

I went down to the waterside and found there had been little rain. Sign of water on the rock is marked lower than before. I didn't listen carefully that Korea would become the country that lacks water, but I realize it nowadays.

I don't know if these frogs realize or not, they were playing in the water with friends. They were splashing water with their feet. The water level had dropped and made a puddle. It was full of frogs and tadpoles. Their small legs stretching out looked really cute.

There were only sand in the upper stream, but river bed of the down stream was full of large rocks. I felt like I met various types of river at once walking along this road. It's the perfect season to take a stroll with clear sky and low humidity, even if it was a little hot.

There was a photo zone that I couldn't use, because I was walking around alone. If you have company, it would be good to take photos each time and post them on Facebook and Instagram.

Walking up a little more, there was the river full of sand. There is no rock on the river bed anymore. You would often find pensions and bed and breakfasts across the river. It's good to go swimming in summer here. There are many shady areas alongside of the river.

You can often find birdhouses hanging over trees, when you look up to the sky. There were real birdhouses that birds go in and out. It was a pleasing trekking.

Walking on the first course, several passages from by Yi Hyo-seok were written on tree stumps here and there. Strange relation must have made at the watermill where the daughter of Mr. Seong and Heo Saeng-won. This watermill was in front of the entrance of the restaurant 'Pulnae-eum(The scent of grass)' in Bongpyeong. I went to that restaurant but I didn't take any photo of it… I will show you that restaurant in another post...

You don't have to worry about getting lost, because there are signal ribbons here and there on the course. That can't be right to go into the grueling mountain because the ribbons will lead your way. Do you agree with it?

I visited the Auto-Camping Site of Heungjeong Valley to let my legs rest that suffered from walking several kilometers. You can reach here after walking up along the river to the north that leads you to Herb Nara Farm for about 5 minutes. If you have your car, it would be good to park your car here for a while and take a rest by immersing your feet in water.

The weather is very hot but there was not many people enjoying camping, yet. There was the only one tent In the wide Auto-camping site.

I took off my shoes and put my feet into the water. A child under the tree was catching fishes. Aren't you curious of what he/she caught?

I heard there was severe drought but I was relived that Pyeongchang still had quite amount of water. Here was the upper region of the river. The water was clear and water temperature was moderate to do swimming.

Wow~ A child who looks 7~8 years old caught 6 fishes! He/She got it with a small fish trap made of plastic. It seems children can buy soft fish traps as their marine tools. It will be very fun to play with children catching fishes, even though you don't eat them. Don't forget to keep the fishes in care and to free them!

The Hyoseok Literature 100Ri Road is lined up over 6 myeons of Pyeongchang. This road can fully gratify the senses of people who don't know the short novel of Yi Hyo-seok, . It will give people who were deeply touched by Yi Hyo-seok's literature the greatest sensitivity, as well. There are QR codes in between that you can get diverse tourist information and listen to the novel with narration.
