The city around Gyeonghogang river in Gyeongsangnam-do Province is famous for foods made of freshwater fish. Hamyang has many restaurants which sell various freshwater fish foods. I chose “Josaenzip” that has been loved by Hamyang people for 30 years. It is so extraordinary name, huh? Josaen is a dialect that means Joseonsaeng(Jo teacher) in Gyeongsangdo province. Ok, here we go!

“Josaenzip”

is popular with tourists on weekends since it is close to Sangnim

park. But usually, it is crowded with local people because it has

Hamyang County Office and market nearby. You should go there because

it has been loved by tourists and local people.

The main foods are made of freshwater fish. “Fish soup noodle” is the most famous menu for lunch in the restaurant. So I ordered fish soup noodle and fish soup rice. I wonderd about the name of “Josaenzip”, the name of the restaurant. The order said he named the restaurant after his last name “Joe” and teacher's name “Saen”. “Josaenzip” means “the house of teacher Joe”. The owner's looking and “Josaenzip” are well matched.

It dosen't take long time to make fish soup because it has been already made. Five side dishes like kimchi, stir-fried boiled fish paste and bean sprouts have been served. You should put prickly ash powder and chopped cheongyang red pepper on the right side of the picture.

This is “fish soup noodle”. Even though it has been put in a small bowl, noodle and soup are large enough. I asked the owner which fishes have been put. Then he said that the food is made of freshwater fish and catfish.

Various freshwater fishes are boiled for a long time, and finely ground without fish bone and guts. So the soup is deep and clean without fish smell. They become even more softer with aromatic outer leaves. Those who don't like fish would enjoy fish soup noodle.

Thin plain noodles have been used. Well boiled noodles and deep meat broth are well matched. Well boiled fish rice porrige and fish soup are always delicious. They are soft and chewy.

Those who like rice rather than flour shold eat fish soup rice. Rice is served with fish soup.

People of Gyeongsang provinces eat fish soup foods with powdered Japanese prickly ash berry. It has extraordinary fragrance and taste. Hamyang people put powdered Japanese prickly ash berry and cheongyang red pepper when having fish soup noodles. There are pros and cons for Chinese pepper. Those who don't like it shouldn't put it. But fish soup noodle is even more delicious with Chinese pepper.

You can find the flesh of freshwater fish in the soup. So it tastes deep and soft. The broth of fish soup noodles and fish soup rice is the same. But the soup of fish soup noodles is thicker than that of fish soup rice.

Fish soup noodle of “Josaenzip” is famous for the clean soup. I think the secrets of the taste are recipe and fresh ingredients. Various kinds of freshwater fishes are living in the aquarium in front of the store. I had pleasant time in the restaurant. Why don't you visit here during the trip to Hamyang?
