3. Introduction to chicken (fried chicken)

Fried chicken, which is chicken coated with flour batter and then fried, is called chicken in Korea.

Chicken is obviously not a Korean traditional food since it’s popular world-widely.

But thanks to Korean Wave, Korean style chicken has been popular in east southern countries.

Fried chicken was introduced in Korea by the US army after the Korean War in the 1950s. But the oil was not easily available so the electric oven was used to fry chicken. Then as they started to produce oil as Korean economic grew in the 1970s, people began to enjoy chicken(fried chicken).

Fried chicken was called Tongdak at first, which literally means that a whole chicken is fried.

The chain restaurants started to open everywhere since the 1980s and KFC could even open its chain shops in Korea.

Fried chicken is popular in the world but there are Korean style recipes and cultures.

Korean people use garlic to remove the smell of meat. So Korean (fried) chickens smell like garlic.

Based on basic recipe of frying chicken, people have developed new recipes using Korean traditional sauce like Gochujang paste or soy sauce.

And people eat this greasy chicken with Chicken-mu(chopped radish) that is marinated in vinegar.

Chicken is one of delivery foods in Korea.

There are so many chicken chain shops even in a small country so you’ll be delivered chicken in any second with a simple phone call.

It’s delicious and convenient to eat so it’s eaten more often than other Korean traditional foods like Bulgogi or Galbi.

People enjoy chicken with beer or coke. Kids have coke while adults drink beer. Especially chicken with beer is called Chimaek.

Korean chicken and beer got so famous in east southern countries after a famous Korean TV series showing that the main female character enjoys chicken and beer was aired on.

Even now, you’ll see many foreign tourists looking for Chimaek in downtowns like Myeongdong or Gangnam so I’d like you to experience Korean style chicken with cool beer on this hot day.

4. Kinds of (fried) chicken

Since the fried chicken is loved by everyone in Korea, there have been many variations developed so far.

And the most popular ones are as follows.

* Regular chicken: Chopped chicken pieces are coated with flour batter and fried

* Yangnyeom(sauced) chicken: Regular chicken sauced with spicy Gochujang paste

* Ganjang(soy sauce) chicken: Regular chicken sauced with salty soy sauce

* Dak-gangjeong: It tastes like Yangnyeon chicken sauced with spicy Gochujang paste but it is chewy and crunchy with starch syrup

You must be familiar with regular chicken so I suggest that you should try spicy or soy sauce chickens.

5. How to enjoy (fried) chicken even more

Koreans used to enjoy Tongdak, a whole chicken fried, before numerous chicken chain shops started to emerge throughout the country.

At the time, Dakbal(chicken feet) and Dakddongjib(gizzard) were fried and served as well.

They are not served these days but you can find them at traditional markets or chicken streets.

They don’t look yummy for sure but they are so chewy and yummy so I want you to try it at least for once.

And the reason why Koreans love fried chickens is not just because of its taste.

For kids, when they get good grades at school or when they did something nice to be appraised of or when they have birthday parties, they eat chickens as a reward or a gift.

And for adults, they enjoy Chimaek(chicken and beer) with their friends when they’re in the mood for a drink after work.

You can enjoy chicken and beer the most when you watch sports games. They always eat this when they watch important soccer games or baseball games they shouldn’t miss.

You might not be able to reach chicken shops when there’s an important sports game on TV.

If there’s a game while you are in Korea, you should try Chimaek and cheer for our team with us. I bet you’ll have a pleasant and exciting experience.
