Chungju is the major transportation point, located in the center of South Korea. It is located in the street corner from Haneuljae pass in Chungju to Mungyeongsaejae pass in Mungyeong. Now it is included in Woraksan National Park, which spreads out to Chungju, Jecheon, Danyang and Mungyeong. As it has many mountaintops, it also has a lot of valleys. I wanted to look around every place. But today, I will look around Mireukdaewon stone temple site at the entrance of Haneuljae pass.

I once told about wonteo in the writing of Mungyeongsaejae. Won was the center of old city system, and the rest area made along with main street. It was used to take care of horses, accommodate tourists and serve a meal. There was Mireuk-ri wonteo, but it disappeared.

How old people carry the money? Did they carry the money made of a mass of iron? No, they didn't. Once upon a time, won or inn performed as a bank. Those who have the money deposited it, and received a document. If he visited another inn, he wrote a check. And all transactions were calculated later.

There is Mireukdaewon stone temple site next to Mireuk-ri wonteo. It is located in the basin between Haneuljae pass in the east and Jireupjjae in the west. It was the important national road from the period of the Three States to the Joseon Dynasty period. It has not only religious significance, but also military and economic functions. There are a lot of relics like a stone Buddha, stone tower, stone lantern, flagpole support and stone turtle in the precincts. You can imagine splendid Buddhist temple in the Koryo Dynasty.

There is a stone embankment which fixes flagpole support in the right side of the entrance. It seems that it was the entrance of the Buddhist temple. Flagpole support was a pillar where a flag was put up, showing that it was the holy district. It is really rare that lotus patterns are engraved on the outside of upper pillar.

A huge stone turtle is located in the left side of the entrance, which is a prop to fix tombstone. But tombstone doesn't exist. Many people said they couldn't even find a piece of tombstone around the place. It seems that tombstone was not built due to a war, or someone pulled out it and took away.

The Buddhist temple is terraced. A tower or a stone lantern is located in the each stairs. What a distinctive structure! Six-metered five storied stone pagoda is 95th national treasure. Multiple towers in the Koryo Dynasty have the similar shape. Brick pagoda of Silleuksa temple in Yeoju looks like this.

Many treasures or documents are hided in towers. I think the stylobate was robbed by someone as there is a huge hole in the next side of it, and a trace that person dug.

A square stone lantern is located in the backside of five storied stone pagoda. This stone lantern has a distinctive figure. Another stone lantern with similar shape made in the Koryo Dynasty has been discovered in Gaeseong area of North Korea, which was the capital of Goguryeo. A square stone looks more cool and spirited than small octagonal stone lantern.

I almost reached to the end of Mireukdaewon stone temple site. There is one octagonal stone lantern. Cultures of Unified Silla and Koryo coexist given that there are the square stone of the Koryo Dynasty and octagonal stone in the Unified Silla Dynasty at the same Buddhist temple. When you look through the small hole of stone lantern, you can see the face of stone Buddhist.

A standing stone Buddha is the most distinctive sculpture around here. It is 96th national treasure. If you see the stone and stone Buddhist for a while, you will find moss on them. However, only the face of stone Buddhist doesn't have moss. There is a lot of moss over the head and under the neck, but not in the face. Even experts don't know why.

There were some statues of the Buddha in the hole of piled stones, but few of them are left. They are even being destroyed now. Restoration work is scheduled, so I am looking forward to seeing it.

This stone Buddha is looking toward the north. Here is a legend about prince Maeui of Silla. Shilla

surrendered to Goryeo, as there was no way to fight against it. So princess Deokju built Deokjusa temple in Woraksan mountain in order to comfort her sorrow. And prince Maeui built the stone Buddha to the direction of Deokjusa temple, letting them looking each other. I sympathize with their sorrow to lose their country.

Stone statue is surrounded by stone wall. There is Seokguram Grotto in Silla. This place was the Buddhist temple imitating Seokguram Grotto. People would cut a groove and put small statues of the Buddha just like the tabernacle of Seokguram Grotto. However, now the wood roof is gone.

Chungju is famous for its apple. Apple orchards spread out the road to Mireukdaewon stone temple site. It is so pleasant. If you come here by car, you should drive through the third national highway from chungju interchage of Jungbu expressway to Suanbo, and take the 597 route to Woraksan mountain. If you use bus, you should take 246 intra-city bus in Chungju bus terminal and get off at Mireukrisa temple site. When you walk through apple orchards and Mireukdaewon stone temple site, you will find Haneuljae pass.
