Wolmido, many of you might have stories and memories when you hear this place. Incheon might be the closest ocean you can get from Seoul and in the city, there’s a place with full of the youth all the time and that’s Wolmido. But why does it have Do(島; island) in its name that refers to an island when it is not? This place used to be an island that has ocean between it and Incheon Station. Although it is land now after filling it with soil, they turned many oceans into lands especially in case of port cities developed during the Japanese colonial era including Gunsan and Mokpo. You can see most of the area near ocean in Incheon is made ground. So let’s drive into the island(?).

Wolmido when the sun is setting reminds you of anything? Many of you must have memories here enjoying rides with old lovers and drinking soju with raw fish.

But it turned into a place more alive than ever. It has new stores and more rides. But today, we did not come here for raw fish but to see sunset so we slowly headed to the ocean.

East Sea is a nice place for sunrise but the sunset view is indeed more beautiful because it shows more dramatic colors.

If you bring someone who’s about to leave you to the western sea when the sun was about to drop, don’t you think she (he) would change their mind and have romantic feelings for you? It’s cold in winter but it does not have sea fog so it looks more beautiful than in summer.

Most of the restaurants and cafes in Wolmido are almost the same. But the refreshment stand cafe called Yejeon with walls covered with ivy has been here for over 20 years. Old furniture, carpet and antique goods seemingly from the 80s were all over the place that shows us the history. It would be nice to eat pork cutlet while enjoying Incheon ocean, wouldn’t it? If you’re not hungry, you might as well eat parfait, the dessert you might have been used to seduce your old girlfriend. It’s hard to find it in Seoul. And it is decent!

I walked along the beach a while and heard loud music of popular kpop groups from the building that looks like a folded-paper crane. I don’t see anyone sitting here since it’s so cold but it was fun to watch it standing. The sound was so loud that I felt like I was in a club.

That Ferris wheel over there is Wolmido Amusement Park(Wolmi Theme Park). And Tagada(Disco Pangpang) with a fun DJ guy on a round spinning stage is right there in the park. DJ Yong who controls the Disco Pangpang is quite famous on cable TV. I bet all of people living in Wolmido are gathering here to see him and listen to his funny comments.

Sunset view on western sea is quite amazing, isn’t it? The big ship in the middle is warship. It anchors at the dock and moves with cannons hanging on them. It looks quite big when I saw it and it was a quite new experience for me as well. You can also enjoy cruise ship in Wolmido that tours Incheon Bridge and Jakyakdo. It costs 16,000 per adult and 9,000 won per child, and the last ship departs every two hours from 12 and the last ship departs at 16.

I couldn’t see people in the theme park after the sunset in cold winter. You could see fun things here during the day on weekends when it’s crowded with people. Well, I am okay since I am here for night view. ^^*

When did they build this Ferris wheel? I don’t recall this before, anyways, we could’ve seen the whole Incheon downtown with Incheon Port and Yellow Sea on this.

This place can be this empty at night on weekdays because it’s below zero temperature. I literally saw no one except us. I feel like we own this place. I don’t mind waiting for a ride for 30 minutes but walking in this quiet park is quite okay as well. ^^*

If you’re here around 5 to 6 in cold winter, you can do anything just like the whole world is yours! The employees must be somewhere but I couldn’t see any tourist except us.

Tagada, which is also called Disco Pangpang, is the most famous ride in Wolmido. The rides themselves are fun but most of all, a male named DJ Yong here gives fun comments and makes passengers laugh and his speech is like a pleasant performance. I had a chance to ride this with my family in my hometown and all of us from kids to adults enjoyed it. I strongly suggest you try this.

I came to Wolmido for night view and it’s nice to play without disturbances since it was empty in winter, I LOVE IT. ^^*

The sun was sinking below the horizon. I’ve seen sunset many times in many places but this view is one of the best. I could see port not just horizon and apartments and mountains in this direction that makes the ocean look much more beautiful. So if you’re in Incheon, you’d better come to Wolmido when the sun is about to set. It’s amazing.
