Braised spicy monkfish is a braised dish made with monkfish, originating from Masan, Gyeongsangnam-do in Korea. Its Korean name is actually ‘agwijjim’, but is more commonly referred to as ‘agujjim’. Chili powder, crushed spring onions and garlic are used for the spicy flavor, and warty sea squirt, bean sprouts and water celeries are added to give a refreshing taste to monkfish. Traditional braised spicy monkfish is made by mixing dried monkfish with all kinds of spices. Monkfish had been thrown away due to its hideous appearance up until about 30 years ago, but now it is loved as a typical native dish around Masan and has become one of the most popular Korean foods.
Making braised spicy monkfish with the rich fish fillet of monkfish itself, Yangchonri Agu provides a more generous serving and richer taste than the price would suggest.
