World's biggest Ceramics Festival 'Gyeonggi International Ceramics Biennale' Yeoju : Multicolored(彩色)

This post is about 'Yeoju' which is the last place of the Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale 2015, following Gwangju and Icheon. This world's biggest ceramics festival is held in Gwangju, Icheon, and Yeoju this year. Each cities expresses the past, present, and future of ceramic art under different themes; Traditional color(本色), Distinctive color(異色), and Multicolored(彩色). Distinctive feature of Yeoju is that there is an exhibition with use of human senses. It's impressive that there are ceramic works using sense of hearing, smell, touch, and taste. Shall we go in to look around?

+ Theme of Yeoju, Gyeonggido : Multicolored(彩色) – Modern ceramic art through a combination of other genres

The main purpose of this exhibition is to show that contemporary ceramics enriches color of our daily life. Works in this special exhibition were created by artists who are in Korea. You can appreciate diverse works that stimulates your five senses by using the Korea's traditional concept of color, five cardinal colors-Blue green, red, yellow, white, black.

Festivals are held at Gonjiam Doja Park in Gwangju, Cerapia in Icheon, and Dojasesang in Yeoju. It's little rainy. Let's go into the museum holding my camera in my breast.

The exhibition hall is at Bandal Art Museum in the Doja Sesang. There is the special exhibition on the first floor and the main exhibition on the second floor.

+ International Ceramics Exhibition for the Disabled 2015

Here is International Life Ceramics Hall located on the first floor. The International Ceramics Exhibition for the Disabled is the first event that is started this year. It's very praiseworthy that this event increases opportunities for the disadvantaged to participate in artistic activities. I sincerely hope this exhibition keeps being one of important features of the biennale.

I find the exhibition held in Yeoju is the most popular to female spectators while looking around three cities. In particularly, 'Beautiful House'. She won the gold prize with this one.

This work called 'We are the Spring to someone' won the gold prize. It will look like the work made by children during art class, but you might be surprised that this is made by children who have the sight disability, physical disability, and mental disorder.

is honored by receiving the grand prize! It was made by the four disabled who have brain lesions and physical disabilities. Isn't it pretty?

is very popular among female spectators. They repeat “O my~ so cut”. A few people say they would purchase all the works if they were on sale!

+ Section 1. Coloring Space

Here is the place where two artists per space show their works that they reinterpret with their sensitivity by matching colors and senses in five sections. Bluish-green is matched with the sense of sight, red with taste, yellow with touch, white with smell, and black with hearing. You can have special experience to appreciate the works by focusing on only one color and sense.

The way up to the second floor is impressive. I met Naver power bloggers in travel that day. It was pleasant to see them in a long time so we looked around together.

- Blooming Garden

Blooming Garden expresses a garden in full bloom in April and May with soil and sugar. I can feel vivid red color and sweet sense of taste. In fact, spectators can try it. I feel much happiness to see ceramic works with diverse tons of red on the surface of wall and sugar flowers and cakes with the inlaying technique.

These works are made with some glass and textile that add the sense of touch. Some of them are allowed to touch and feel.

The textile is soft but tough and glass is hard and cold but fragile. They express the relationship and emotion between the human being and space metaphorically. It's the unconventional attempt to put colorful textiles on the ceramics.

- Beyond, Open space with Sound

It is the most impressive section. The dark space open by sounds! Ceramics hanging from the ceiling produce clear sound by wind. The sound does not exist without ceramics and ceramics does not exist without the sound, either. They interact each other.

- Whiter than White

It's the place that stimulates the sense of smell with white ceramic arts and perfume. Desire of women who cross ideal and reality is expressed through the white woman, bird, and cat. When I breathe while appreciating this work, I smell various perfumes from somewhere. These fragrances show mind of the women.

The origin of fragrances is from the center of round sculpture with the fragrances of rose that symbolizes passive woman, musk like woman's flesh, and soil meaning the mother's instinctive love. They are united together with the ceramic woman and stimulate my sensitivity.

This woman who is looking down all the works on the hill is unexpected point of the work. This is just my opinion without the intention of artist.

+ Section 2. Coloring Life

The biennale of this year tries various new things in the second section with combination between webtoon and ceramics. Many impressive works that embodied the cartoon are put on exhibition.

Stepping into the entrance, there is a comic book. When you read it and look around along the flow of its story, you will see many ceramic arts that reproduced scenes in the comic book. It's the unique experience.

Do you know the webtoon by Ha Il-gwon? This work called 'God of Ceramic' parodied the webtoon. Characters in the webtoon enjoy taking a bath in the bathtub with bluish-green water. It's the outstanding attempt of ceramic art.

Title : , it looks like an omnibus film. Each ceramic character has vivid expression on their face. It is impressive work mingled with the light.

As the theme of this biennale shows ‘Color(色) : Ceramic Spectrum’, colorful cloth covers the sky in the middle of the yard in Dojasesang. There are ceramic products are on sale. You can buy a cup and small dishes with several thousand wons. It's the interesting place to look around.
